Prague makes Top Five on TripAdvisor list

The Czech capital now ranks as the top location in the EU, according to the travel site

Prague is no stranger to best of and top 10 lists. The most recent accolade for the city of a hundred spires is hitting No. 5 on TripAdvisor’s list of the Top 25 Destinations in the World for 2015. It was also the highest-ranked location in the European Union, coming in just ahead of London and Rome.

Beating the Golden City this year are, in order, Marrakech, Morocco; Siem Reap, Cambodia; Istanbul, Turkey; and Hanoi, Vietnam.

Prague also came in fifth place last year, having jumped from No. 9 in 2013. But the other leaders in the 2015 list have shifted. Istanbul, which has one-half of the city in Europe and the other half in Asia, was the leader last year, followed by Rome, London and Beijing. So even though Prague stayed in the same position, it is now the best completely European city to visit.

Prague was referred to by some as the Left Bank of the 1990s, and it now comes in ahead of Paris on the list. The City of Light came in at No. 9.

New York City, considered by many to be a top must-see place, didn’t even make the top 10, coming in a paltry 11thplace.

“The bohemian allure and fairytale features of Prague, #5 in the World in this year’s Travelers’ Choice Destination Awards, make it a perfect destination for beach-weary vacationers who want to immerse themselves in culture,” TripAdvisor says in its description, before recommending spending the evening in a cellar “where historic pubs set the scene for a night of traditional tippling.”

The Travelers’ Choice award-winning destinations are determined by users of TripAdvisor, a site that crowd-sources information about travel-related topics such as restaurants and hotels through interactive forums and user-generated content.

The awards are determined with an algorithm that gives responses different weight based on the quality and quantity of reviews from each user.

TripAdvisor was founded in February 2000. The Top 25 Destinations in the World list is now in its seventh year.
