Book ahead for a special meal out over the holidays

It’s time to make a list and check it twice, and that includes sending out Christmas cards, buying presents and planning for holiday meals. Thankfully, many restaurants in Prague are offering special Christmas menus between Dec. 24 and 26, meaning you can sit back, relax and enjoy the festive season without having to do the dishes afterward. Here’s a rundown of what’s happening – make sure to book ahead, though, as many places will fill up. Note that most meals take place Dec. 24, which is celebrated as Christmas Day in the Czech Republic.

Terasa U Zlaté Studně, voted the best in the country last year by the Grand Restaurant Festival, has an eight-course degustation menu Dec. 24-26 (on Dec. 25 and 26, à la carte items are available as well), with the likes of scallops, grilled monkfish and milk-fed veal, among others. Just off of Old Town Square, Chagall’s Club is preparing a four-course meal for Dec. 24 for 1,390 Kč per person. The menu feature snails, fish soup and roast guinea fowl with Brussels sprouts and Champagne sauce. For more, go to Chagalls.cz.

Brasserie La Gare will have escargot specialties Dec. 24-26, available as à la carte items. For example, a half-dozen snails in wine pastry and currant chutney for 175 Kč. For more, go to Lagare.cz.

Restaurants across the city are preparing special menus for Christmas over the days of Dec. 24-25.

Close to Karlovo náměstí, Brasserie Delice in the Sheraton Hotel, offers a five-course festive menu Dec. 24 and 25 with a take on the traditional Czech Christmas dinner, with fish soup, forest-mushroom risotto and pan-fried carp with potato salad. Como on Wenceslas Square offers three four-course menus Dec. 24 for 950 Kč per person, with a choice of Old Prague, Traditional Czech or Mediterranean themes. For more, go to Comorestaurant.cz.

In the Grand Hotel Paris, the Sarah Bernhardt restaurant has a five-course menu Dec. 24 and 25 between 6 and 11 p.m., with traditional roast turkey with stuffing and potatoes or deep-fried zander with potato salad. The menu costs 2,100 Kč per person. For more, go to Hotel-pariz.cz.

Over in Malá Strana, the Cowboys steakhouse has a Christmas menu for 950 Kč per person Dec. 25 and 26, with duck rillettes, oxtail soup with foie gras and truffles, grilled perch with burgundy sauce and mashed potato, and baked apples with pecans and ice cream. For more, call 296 826 107.

Related to Cowboys, the flagship restaurant Kampa Park offers a set menu Dec. 24. For 2,350 Kč per person, the menu includes beef carpaccio, tuna tartare with black truffles, cod stew, beef steak with sautéed morels and chocolate orange cake with Chantilly cream. For more, call 296 826 112.

Another Kampa restaurant, Hergetova Cihelna, will have a three-course menu Dec. 24, with baked snails, trout and caramel cream. The cost is 1,195 Kč per person; for more, call 296 826 103.

On Dec. 24, the Marriott’s Midtown Grill has a Christmas buffet starting at 6 p.m. for 1,690 Kč per person. On Dec. 25, the surf-and-turf restaurant hosts a Christmas brunch from noon to 3 p.m. for 995 Kč per person, which includes drinks. For more details, call 222 881 212.

At the Kempinski, Le Grill offers its special menu Dec. 22-26, at both lunch and dinner. Costing 1,350 Kč per person, it features halibut, venison and red velvet cake. For more, call 226 226 111.

Svatá Klára, located inside a dramatic stone cave, has a traditional Czech menu Dec. 24 for 1,690 Kč, coming with marinated carp, fish soup and goose-leg confit. For more, go to Svataklara.cz.

The Plzeňská restaurace in the Municipal House has a Czech menu for 750 Kč on Dec. 24, including mushroom risotto, fish soup, fried carp and potato salad, and dessert. For more, go to Plzenskarestaurace.cz.

Located in the same historic building, Francouzská restaurace will have special Christmas menus themed both Czech (1,950 Kč) and French (2,350 Kč) Dec. 24, the latter offering baked foie gras, roasted scallops, venison and dessert. For more, go to Francouzskarestaurace.cz.

Right by Charles Bridge, Mlýnec has a Christmas degustation menu for the entire month of December. For 1,190 Kč, the menu features Bohemian snails, grilled pike perch, South Bohemian carp, veal schnitzel and dessert. For more, go to Mlynec.cz.

Zlatá Praha in the Hotel InterContinental has a Christmas à la carte menu Dec. 24, with options such as grilled shrimp with pumpkin risotto, Cuba groats with mushrooms, traditional fish soup, cream of roasted chestnuts and smoked breast of duck, grilled pike perch, baked turkey, venison loin with plum sauce, and other specialties. Close to Prague Castle, Villa Richter’s Piano Nobile has a five-course menu on Dec. 24. Costing 1,950 Kč per person, the menu includes roast turkey or grilled monkfish, among other items. Go to Villarichter.cz for more.

The Italian eatery La Finestra in Old Town will serve a four-course special menu on Dec. 24 for 1,950 Kč per person, coming with chicken soup with truffle egg, pumpkin risotto, poached cod with potato salad or stewed beef with potato gratin, and Zabaglione with strawberries in chocolate. Aromi in Vinohrady, sister restaurant to the above, also has a four-course menu Dec. 24, for 1,450 Kč, featuring smoked eel salad with watercress, traditional fish soup, poached pike with tagliolini and caviar baba cake with lemon cream. For more, call 222 713 222.

La Republika, close to náměstí Republiky, serves up the traditional Czech menu for just 450 Kč per person, including groats with mushrooms, fish soup, fried carp and pear dumplings. For 500 Kč, the same meal is available with veal schnitzel as a carp substitute. For more, go to Larepublika.cz.

In Karlín, the restaurant in Jurys Inn hosts a Christmas menu Dec. 24 and 25, featuring duck pate, liver dumplings soup, fried carp or leg of goose and chocolate cake, among other items. Reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. Call 226 222 606.

Right on Old Town Square, the English-themed sports pub Caffrey’s will have a Traditional Irish Christmas Menu available Dec. 24-26 all day. Items are available either a la carte or all together for 865 Kč per person and include a starter of a choice of Dublin Bay prawn cocktail, smoked wild Irish salmon or Jameson-infused chicken liver pate; a main course of roast turkey, honey-glazed ham, mashed potatoes, a mix of vegetables, bread pudding, cranberry sauce and gravy; and dessert of either sherry trifle or traditional Christmas pudding with brandy butter, followed by either an Irish coffee, Cognac or Port.

For 475 Kč per person, Caffrey’s will also serve a Traditional Czech Christmas Menu, featuring a choice of fish soup, “false” snails or steak tartare; an entree of either breaded carp with potato salad or turkey escalope with tartare sauce and boiled potatoes; and Czech Christmas cake and cookies.
