The 36-year-old forward, who transferred to Omsk from the New York Rangers this summer, opened the scoring in a game against Khabarovsk Sept. 26 only 31 seconds after the opening face-off. Previously, Jágr scored just 37 seconds into a game against Novokuznetsk.

PREGNANT Shooter Kateřina Emmons, who won two medals — one gold and one silver — at the recent Beijing Olympics, announced she will withdraw from competition for at least one season because of pregnancy. The father is U.S. shooter Matt Emmons, who won the silver medal in men’s 50-meter prone rifle in Beijing.
FINE Czech national soccer team striker Václav Svěrkoš of Baník Ostrava was fined 80,000 Kč ($5,056) by the Czech Football Association’s disciplinary committee for attacking Antonín Rosa of Teplice after a Gambrinus liga game Sept. 14. A television replay showed Svěrkoš squeezing Rosa’s neck during the players’ handshake after the game. The game’s referee did not spot the incident.
HOCKEY Hockey coach Ladislav Lubina took over Slovak second-division team Nové Zámky after two months of inactivity following a July car accident. Lubina’s careless driving was at the root of the tragic accident, which resulted in one fatality. Lubina then fled the scene of the crash before reporting to a police station in east Bohemia six hours after the accident. His coaching contract with Extraliga’s HC Pardubice was subsequently suspended. Lubina has been investigated by the police and faces potential prison time.
DRAW The Czech men’s tennis team will play France in the Davis Cup’s opening round March 6–8, 2009. The Czechs will enjoy a home court advantage and are likely to take the French on hard courts. The venue of the matches is yet to be announced.
BAROŠ Milan Baroš, Czech national soccer team striker, scored two goals for Galatasaray against Konyaspor Sept. 28, thus confirming his impressive start in the Turkish league, where he transferred from France’s Olympique Lyon. Baroš has scored two goals in each of his last three games.
