Špotáková Olympic gold medalist Barbora Špotáková followed her Beijing success by setting a world record in javelin at the World Athletics Finals Sept. 14 in Stuttgart. She launched the javelin 72.28 meters, more than half a meter longer than the previous mark, held by Cuban Osleidys Menendez. Špotáková had captured the World Athletics Finals crown three times in Stuttgart, each with a Czech record throw.

Paralympics Six Czech Olympians have earned gold in the 2008 Paralympic Games. The most recent was archer David Drahonínský, who won in Individual Compound W1. Swimmer Běla Hlavačková brought home the first gold medal for the Czech team by capturing the women’s 50 meter backstroke title. The Czechs have accumulated 22 medals overall, ranking 14th.
Rainout Cardion AB rider Karel Abraham stunned the 250cc field during the first session in Indianapolis Sept. 12 by lapping the brand-new MotoGP circuit in 2:02.529, over a tenth of a second quicker than Hiroshi Aoyama of Red Bull KTM. Abraham’s daring ride on the rain-soaked track amounted to little, however, as the remnants of Hurricane Ike washed out Sunday’s 250cc race. It was the first time 250cc teams had traveled to the United States for a competitive event.
EuroBasket Bosnia Herzegovina pulled even with the Czech Republic in Group D action at EuroBasket by easily dropping the Czechs 95-79 Sept. 14. After falling behind in a furious first half, the Czechs rallied behind the play of forwards Petr Benda and Jiří Welsch in the third period. But the Bosnian squad mounted an 11-0 run to pull ahead for good.
Combine Under the watchful eyes of NFL scout Larry Dixon, the Czech League of American Football (ČLAF) will hold a combine for players age 18 to 23 in Prague the weekend of October 18–19. Joining Dixon will be coaches Shaun Fatah, Wanja Muller and Lee Rowland, all with either NFL or GFL experience. The combine will identify players to send to NFL player development camps in London and Seville later in the year.
High School Petr Boháček, who played last season on both the Prague Lions junior and senior teams in the ČLAF, has been named defensive captain of Lake Geneva Badger High School’s football team. Boháček, a quarterback in Prague, earned the starting outside linebacker position and notched seven tackles in his very first game. His team is currently 3-0.
Rematch Sunday’s Gambrinus liga match between Sparta Praha and Brno ended without drama. In their previous encounter, Tomáš Řepka’s memorable send-off perhaps cost Sparta the league title and fans expected some sort of retribution in the rematch. Řepka, however, played a solid game, unmarred by referee’s interference. Sparta won 2-0.
