Qualifying tourney win opens way to Euro championship

COACH The Czech Soccer Association (ČMFS) is set to vote July 17 on a new head coach for the national team, replacing Karel Brückner. ČMFS Vice President Vlastimil Košťál said the organization will select from three candidates, including Brückner’s assistant coach Petr Rada, former Czech team coach Jozef Chovanec and German coach Klaus Toppmöller. Many insiders consider Chovanec the most likely candidate to fill the vacancy.

CYCLIST Cyclist Roman Kreuziger pedaled to a good start at the world’s most prestigious cycling event, Tour de France. After 10 of 21 stages, Kreuziger ranked 21st in the overall standings, seven minutes behind leader Cadel Evans of Australia. Kreuziger, 22, is the only Czech taking part in the event this year. Expectations are high following his triumph in June’s Tour de Suisse.
TENNIS Tennis player Tomáš Berdych reached the finals of an ATP tournament in Baastad, Sweden. Berdych lost the final match to Spain’s Tommy Robredo 6-4, 6-1 July 13.
IN-LINE The Czech women’s in-line hockey team won a historic gold at the FIRS World Championship in Düsseldorf, Germany. In July 13’s final match, the Czechs squeezed past Team Canada 3-2 in overtime. Meanwhile, the Czech men’s team took home the bronze medal.
BOXING Two Czech boxers will contend for world championship belts next fall. Lukáš Konečný is preparing for a rematch against defending WBO super welterweight champ Sergei Dzindziruk, scheduled for late October. Konečný suffered a controversial defeat to the Ukrainian earlier this year. Meanwhile, Rudolf Kraj is set to clash with Giacobbo Fragomeni in a WBC light heavyweight title fight.
GOLF After 12 years of trying, the Czech Republic landed a PGA-sanctioned tournament. Next summer, international stars such as Miguel Angel Jimenez, Sergio Garcia and Ernie Els will be invited to play at the Čeladná golf course. The event takes place July 30 through Aug. 2, 2009. The overall budget for the tournament is 250 million Kč ($17 million).
ELS Ernie Els, currently the world’s sixth-ranked professional golfer, is slated to play an exhibition round as part of Karlštejn’s International Golf Week, July 21–23 of this year. Els, who has notched 59 PGA Tour victories and 16 more on the European circuit, is the highest-ranked golfer ever to play in the Czech Republic.
CRASH Czech national hockey team forward Jakub Klepiš crashed his BMW while trying to escape from a police patrol that stopped him in the early morning hours of July 5. Klepiš was driving under the influence of alcohol. He now awaits a court date. If found guilty, he faces the possibility of up to one year in prison.
