BOYCOTT Foreign Affairs Minister Karel Schwarzenberg said during his visit to Paris April 9 that world politicians should boycott the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Schwarzenberg’s remarks came after talks with his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner. Most of the Cabinet confirmed they would vote against Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek traveling to the Olympics. President Václav Klaus said earlier that he would undergo hip surgery during the games and would be unable to travel to China.

POLL Meanwhile, public opinion research conducted by the Empirica agency in late March found that 16 percent of the country would be happy if Czech athletes did not travel to the Beijing Olympics. The most negative among the 800 respondents were voters of the Green Party; on the other hand, most supporters of the Communists voted for Czech athletes to participate.
TENNIS The men’s Davis Cup team lost in a quarterfinal Davis Cup match against Russia played April 11–13 in Moscow. The Czech Republic’s top player, Tomáš Berdych, took Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko into a fifth set in singles play but then appeared to roll his ankle, forcing Berdych to withdraw from the match and giving Russia the clinching victory.
BASKETBALL In another loss to Russia, the women’s basketball team Gambrinus Brno lost to Russia’s Spartak Moscow, 75-60, in the final game of the Final Four tournament held April 11–13 in Brno. Spartak was the defending champion of the European League. In the semifinals, Brno defeated the French team Bourges 90-81 and Spartak beat Jekaterinburg 78-68.
HOCKEY Slavia Praha and Karlovy Vary continued to trade games in the championship series of the Extraliga. After a 4-1 victory for Karlovy Vary April 14, the best-of-seven series is knotted at three games each. The final and deciding game is scheduled to be played at Slavia April 16.
CHANGE The No. 1 female tennis player, Nicole Vaidišová, has changed her coaches for the first time in her career. Vaidišová has decided not to work with her stepfather, Aleš Kodat, and has hired David Felgate, who in the past guided such stars as Britain’s Tim Henman.
QUIT National team striker Jan Koller said he would withdraw from the team after the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland. The 35-year-old striker, who now plays with Nuremberg in Germany’s Bundesliga, has been an essential player on the team for the last five years. Since his debut on the national team in 1999, Koller has scored 52 goals in 85 games. He is the highest scorer in the national team’s history.
