BRIEFS

NUKED Another town has rejected hosting the country’s planned permanent nuclear waste repository, the mayor of Cejle, west Moravia, told reporters March 22. Out of 238 total votes in a plebiscite, 200 voted against hosting such a facility. The government has identified six potential sites for the geological repository, several of which face stiff opposition from nearby towns.

RESEARCH The Academy of Sciences is preparing three large projects to bolster the country’s research capabilities, in anticipation of 60 billion Kč ($3.7 billion) due to come from European Union innovation funds, the academy said March 19. They include the Central European Synchrotron Laboratory, to be based in Brno, south Moravia; the Extreme Light Infrastructure multipurpose laser; and the Biotechnological and Biomedicine Center, based in Prague. The projects would cost 15 billion Kč in total.
VODAFONE The country’s smallest mobile phone operator, Vodafone, is looking to expand its role on the corporate market through an acquisition or partnership with a fixed-line telecom provider, the Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported March 19. The firm is in talks with 10 companies, though it declined to specify which ones. Vodafone had 2.66 million clients at the end of last year.
WHEELS A Prague-based firm, Coda Development, has invented a self-inflating automobile tire that it plans to hawk at the world’s premier car technology conference in Detroit, Michigan, this April. Unlike previous self-inflating tires, which have typically relied on compressed air, Coda’s tire would use a peristaltic pump, making it potentially much cheaper and more effective.
ADS Spending on Internet advertising rose 70 percent last year to 3.44 billion Kč, the ČTK reported March 21. The study, released by the Czech Publishers’ Association, said that it expects the gross volume spent on banner advertising to rise 30 percent this year to 2.52 billion Kč. The increase in advertising will mainly stem from Euro 2008, the Olympic Games and Senate and regional elections this fall, the study found.
TELECOM A review of the Czech Republic’s telecom market published by the European Commission March 19 found that broadband is experiencing healthy growth, reaching 15 percent penetration and spurred by high rates of competition. However, the fees charged for porting mobile phone numbers remain above the EU average, reaching up to 700 Kč.
