BRIEFS


NAVRÁTILOVÁ Czech-American tennis legend Martina Navrátilová announced in early March that she is once again a citizen of the Czech Republic. Communist authorities stripped Navrátilová of her Czechoslovak citizenship in 1975 after she decided not to return to her homeland and instead sought asylum in the United States, where she became a citizen in 1981. The 51-year-old tennis guru, who retired in 2006 after winning her 59th Grand Slam title, said she will hold Czech and U.S. passports in the future

SKIER Downhill skier Šárka Záhrobská finished third in the women’s slalom at the World Cup final in Bormio, Italy, March 14. It was Záhrobská’s second finish on the World Cup podium this season. In the overall standings, Záhrobská finished in fifth place.
FINISH Other Czech skiers also had strong finishes in their last World Cup races of the season. Cross-country skier Lukáš Bauer finished second in a combined 20-kilometer classic and 15-kilometer freestyle race in Santa Catarina, Italy, March 15 and 16. (Bauer had already clinched the World Cup’s overall title.) Meanwhile, Michal Šlesingr won a 15-kilometer biathlon in Oslo, Norway, March 16.
GOLF After 12 years, the Czech Republic will again play host to the PGA golf tournament, the management of the PGA European Tour has announced. Milan Veselý, president of the Czech Golf Federation, said the event will take place either in late July or early August next year. He hinted that the most likely venue will be the golf course at Karlštejn or Konopiště.
EXHIBITION Former world No. 1 tennis player and the French Open winner Thomas Muster of Austria will appear on the clay courts of Prague’s Štvanice tennis center in an exhibition match against Sláva Doseděl. The match will be part of the ATP Challenger and WTA Tournament held April 28 to May 4 at Štvanice. Tournament director Vladislav Šavrda said they attempted to lure American Andre Agassi for the annual tournament before settling on Muster.
TRANSFER Twenty-year-old soccer midfielder Luboš Kalouda is set to move from the Gambrinus liga’s FC Brno to Russian powerhouse CSKA Moscow. Kalouda signed a five-year contract with CSKA worth about 130 million Kč ($8 million). By moving abroad, Kalouda joined the list of young players who have left the league since helping win the silver medal at FIFA’s U-20 World Cup last summer.
SPONSOR GE Money Bank has become an official partner of the Czech Olympic team. The bank signed a sponsorship contract with the Czech Olympic Committee (ČOV) that will provide financial support to athletes until the 2012 Games. Overall, ČOV receives some 300 million Kč from businesses between each Summer Olympics.
