SKIING Cross-country skier Lukáš Bauer took a big step toward securing the World Cup by winning a 15-kilometer race in Lahti, Finland, March 2. Bauer stretched his lead against runner-up Rene Sommerfeldt of Germany to 428 points. Should Bauer win the World Cup, which he could clinch as soon as March 5, he would become only the third Czech skier to do so. Ski jumper Jakub Janda won the World Cup in 2006 and Tomáš Kraus won two ski-cross titles in 2005 and 2006.

UPSET The 17-year-old tennis player Petra Kvitová scored a major upset at a WTA tournament in Memphis last week. Kvitová beat the United States’ top-seeded Venus Williams 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in what was Kvitová’s second-ever match on the WTA Tour. She was unable to repeat her performance in the next round and lost to Russia’s Alla Kudrjavceva.
NYMBURK The run of the Nymburk men’s basketball team in the ULEB Cup came to an end Feb. 26, with Nymburk losing to Poland’s Turów Zgorzelec 68-66. Since the teams tied their first game, Turów advanced by a razor-thin margin of two total points.
PONG The men’s national table-tennis team finished fifth at the World Championships in Guangzhou, China, March 2. After losing to China in the quarterfinals, the Czechs defeated Taiwan 3-0 in a consolation match.
MONEY Chelsea goalie Petr Čech is the highest-paid Czech soccer player and the 49th best-paid player in the world, according to research by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Čech’s contract with Chelsea of England’s Premiership earned him 4.32 million euros ($6.52 million/108.3 million Kč).
CONTROVERSY National team striker Jan Koller is being scrutinized by the German Football Association (DFB) for allegedly spitting on an opponent at a Bundesliga game March 2. Koller, who has been playing for Nuremberg, was photographed spitting on Hannover’s Christian Schulz at the end of a game Nuremberg lost 2-1. Koller denied any wrongdoing.
SPEEDING In another investigation of a national soccer team striker, a civilian court in Trevoux, France, postponed its final verdict in the case of Milan Baroš’s speeding charges. In November, police caught Baroš driving his Ferrari at 271 kilometers per hour, ignoring the 130 kilometer per hour speed limit. Police seized Baroš’s car and fined him 1,500 euros. On Feb. 28, the court decided the investigation must be reopened to compile further evidence.
NONSMOKING The new Slavia Praha soccer stadium, set to open in May, will be entirely nonsmoking, the club announced Feb. 28. The stadium will be the first nonsmoking soccer facility in the country.
