HOCKEY Plans to have the New York Rangers open the NHL season with two games in Prague against the Tampa Bay Lightning are all but finalized and will be announced at the NHL’s All-Star Weekend Jan. 26–27, the New York Daily News has reported. The two teams would play in late September at Sazka Arena. Simultaneously, the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins would play in Stockholm.

TENNIS The country’s leading tennis players, Tomáš Berdych and Nicole Vaidišová, both faltered in the fourth round of the Australian Open. Berdych lost to Roger Federer of Switzerland, the world’s No. 1 player, in straight sets Jan. 21, while Vaidišová was outplayed by American Serena Williams in straight sets the day before.
TICKETS About 12,000 tickets to the national soccer team’s three games in the Euro 2008 soccer tournament (against Switzerland, Portugal and Turkey) will be distributed in an online lottery kicking off Feb. 1, the Czech Football Association announced Jan. 18. Fans can apply for the right to purchase a maximum of four tickets per person through Feb. 20. The winners will be announced March 3.
INJURED The downhill skier Ondřej Bank suffered a double fracture of his leg during downhill training on a slope in Kitzbühel, Austria, Jan. 15, ending his season. Bank had become the first Czech man in 25 years to finish on the podium in a World Cup super-combi race when he finished third at a competition in Beaver Creek, Colorado, Nov. 29.
UNBEATEN Meanwhile, another skier, Tomáš Kraus, remains unbeaten this year in the World Cup ski-cross series. Following triumphs in Les Contamines and Flaine, France, Kraus dominated the Jan. 20 race in Kreichsberg, Austria. Kraus won the ski-cross World Cup in 2005 and 2006 and finished second overall last year.
JUVENTUS The Italian soccer club Juventus Turin is negotiating with 1.FC Brno over the transfer of junior midfielder Luboš Kalouda. The 20-year-old will likely receive a contract from Juventus during the winter break. Kalouda earned recognition during the World Under-20 Championship in Canada last summer. Already, goalie Radek Petr, defender Martin Šimůnek and striker Martin Fenin, all members of the Under-20 team, have left the Gambrinus liga to play abroad.
APPOINTED Roman Kumpošt, the former organizing committee head of the 2009 Nordic Ski FIS Championship in Liberec, north Bohemia, will carry out international lobbying on behalf of Praha olympijská, which is developing Prague’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics. Kumpošt, who was fired from the committee last summer by since deposed Education and Sports Minister Dana Kuchtová, has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
