AWARD Speed skater Martina Sáblíková was named the Czech Republic’s Athlete of the Year in a poll of the country’s sports journalists announced Jan. 12. The 20-year-old, who won two World Championship titles last year, finished ahead of javelin thrower Barbora Špotáková and downhill skier Šárka Záhrobská. The two runners-up also won gold medals in world championships.

UNDER-20 As part of the same poll, the Czech Republic’s Under-20 soccer squad, which stunned the world by winning silver medals at the World Championship in Canada last summer, was named the country’s Team of the Year.
SPARTA The country’s reigning hockey champion, HC Sparta Praha, did unexpectedly well at the Super Six tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia, against top European teams. After defeating Finland’s Kärpät Oulu (5-3) and Switzerland’s HC Davos (6-4), Sparta lost to Russian powerhouse Magnitogorsk 5-2 in the final game Jan. 13. It was the best-ever result of a Czech team in the tournament.
SKI CROSS Skier Tomáš Kraus won the opening race of this season’s ski cross World Cup series in Les Contamines, France. Kraus won the World Cup in 2005 and finished second overall last year. Czech-Canadian skier Stanley Hayer, who competed for the Czech national team over the past six years before returning to Canada this year, finished third.
POSTPONED The first boxing match featuring a Czech fighter competing for a World Championship belt has been postponed again. Ukraine’s Sergei Dzindziruk, the reigning champion of the World Boxing Organization’s (WBO) super welterweight category, withdrew from a planned Jan. 19 bout against Lukáš Konečný due to an ankle injury. Konečný canceled the first match in late November due to a rib injury that he suffered during training. A third date for the fight has not been announced.
BASKETBALL The Nymburk men’s basketball team upset Greece’s Panellinionis Athens 86-77 Jan. 8 in the ULEB Cup, hosted in Greece. Nymburk needs one more win in its last two games to advance to the cup’s playoff round.
OFFER The Detroit Red Wings have offered to extend the contract of 43-year-old veteran goalie Dominik Hašek by one more year. Hašek said he will make up his mind on whether to take up the offer or not during the National Hockey League’s summer break.
HOCKEY The women’s Under-18 national hockey team won the bronze medal at the IIHF World Championship in Canada, the best finish ever for women’s hockey in international competition. The Czech Republic beat Sweden 4-2 for the medal Jan. 12, with Alena Polenská and Lucie Manhartová scoring two goals each. The United States and Canada finished first and second, respectively.
