BRIEFS


DRAW The national soccer team will play in the opening match of Euro 2008 finals against Switzerland June 7 in Basel. Following Dec. 2’s draw, its other opponents in the first round will be Portugal (June 11) and Turkey (June 15).

 
WIN Cross-country skier Lukáš Bauer celebrated his career’s fourth victory in the World Cup series after triumphing in the men’s 15-kilometer classic race in Kuusamo, Finland, Dec. 2.
DOWNHILL Downhill skier Ondřej Bank stunned crowds by finishing third in a Super G ski race in a World Cup event in Beaver Creek, Colorado, Nov. 29. Bank is the first Czech man in 26 years to reach the podium in the World Cup.
SLAVIA Slavia Praha soccer team tied with Romania’s Steaua Bucharest 1–1 in the second to the last round of the Champions League’s group phase Nov. 28 in Bucharest. Slavia finished third in its group, behind England’s Arsenal and Spanish Sevilla. Although the club doesn’t advance, it secured a place in the UEFA Cup’s playoffs next spring. Slavia will close its Champions League campaign Dec. 12 with a home game against Sevilla.
UEFA CUP
The two Czech teams in the UEFA Cup’s group stage, Sparta Praha and Mladá Boleslav, kept their chances alive of advancing to the playoffs. Mladá Boleslav came home from Sweden with a 3–1 win against Elfsborg Nov. 29. Sparta played to a draw the same day with Spartak Moscow of Russia, nil-nil. Both Czech teams have to win in the last round Dec. 13 to qualify for the playoffs.
SPRINTERS The world’s two best sprinters, the United States’ Tyson Gay and the Bahamas’ Asafa Powell, could compete in the Golden Cleat competition in Ostrava next June, the event’s organizers have said. The two sprinters would most likely not compete against each other as one of them would run 100 meters and the other one would participate in a 200-meter race, head of the organizing committee Miroslav Černošek said.
TENNIS Czech-Swiss former world No. 1 tennis player Martina Hingis took up equestrian sports after quitting professional tennis in October. Hingis retired from tennis after admitting that she tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon last June.
GOLDEN BALL Czech soccer goalie Petr Čech finished 19th in the prestigious “Golden Ball” poll held annually by France Football magazine. Brazilian striker Kaká, who plays for AC Milan in Italy, was named the best player based in Europe.
AUDIT A financial audit conducted by the Czech Skiing Union has shown that accounting books of the 2009 World Nordic Skiing Championship organizing committee headed by Roman Kumpošt were in order. Former Sports and Education Minister Dana Kuchtová dismissed Kumpošt in September, arguing that nontransparent accounting books were at the root of her decision. Former champion cross-country skier Kateřina Neumannová is now heading the organizing committee.
