BRIEFS


SPEEDWAY Denmark’s Nicki Pedersen won the Czech Grand Prix at the Markéta track in Prague 6–Břevnov July 28. En route to his victory, Pedersen won each of the eight heats in which he raced. Poland’s Jaroslaw Hampel and Rune Holta finished second and third, respectively.

RACING Race driver Tomáš Enge crashed again in a 24-hour race in Spa, Belgium, July 28. Enge, who drove a Ferrari 430 for the Scottish team Scuderia Ecosse, crashed into the wall at a speed of 240 kilometers (149 miles) per hour. Enge suffered no major injuries. Only a week before, the Czech was dismissed from the American Le Mans Series after repeatedly hitting into competing cars.
TRANSFER Slovak soccer goalkeeper Matúš Kozáčik has been transferred from Slavia Praha to crosstown archrival Sparta. The two clubs agreed on the deal only four days before Aug. 4’s kickoff of the Gambrinus liga.
RUGBY The national rugby league team will take on Germany Aug. 4 at the RC Slavia field in Prague 10. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. and attendance is free. This is the national team’s opening game in the European Shield, a round-robin competition that also includes Serbia.
BAD LUCK Slavia soccer midfielder Dušan Švento’s effort to transfer to the English Premiership newcomer Derby County was hindered by a serious knee injury the player suffered while undergoing trials for the British club. Švento tore the cross ligament in his knee and could be unable to play for six months.
RANGER Libor Sionko, midfielder for the national soccer team, has finished his one-year tour with Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers. The 30-year-old will play for Denmark’s FC Copenhagen next season.
SIGNED Hockey forward Petr Nedvěd, who played the past 16 seasons in the NHL, has signed a one-year contract to play with hockey team Sparta Praha. Nedvěd, who last season played with the Edmonton Oilers, appeared in 982 NHL games and scored 310 goals with 407 assists, making him the second most-productive Czech in NHL history, following the New York Rangers’ Jaromír Jágr.
GAMES The national team being sent to the upcoming World University Games, to be held Aug. 8–18 in Bangkok, will be the Czechs’ second-largest delegation in history. Following a 128-member team sent to the previous games in Izmir, Turkey, the country will send 121 athletes to Thailand.
FLOORBALL The Revolution Sharks, an Australian team, will be the most exotic squad featured in this year’s biggest European floorball event, the Czech Open, taking place Aug. 16–19 in Prague. The annual event will feature 224 teams from 18 countries playing this hockey variant, which features no ice or inline skates.
TENDER The Czech biker Lukáš Pešek has started a competition for a model who will stand in front of his bike before the Moto GP race in Brno, south Moravia, Aug. 19. Women with a good command of English are invited to file their entries by Aug. 10 at www.lukas-pesek.com.
