UNDER-20 The junior national soccer team has advanced to the semifinals of the World Under-20 Championship in Canada. The Czechs secured a spot by beating Spain 4–3 in a penalty shootout that followed a 1–1 overtime tie in the July 14 quarterfinals. In its first playoff game, the Czechs defeated Japan, also in a penalty shootout. The Czechs will take on Austria in the July 19 semifinals.

RELEGATED The champions of Czech football’s B league, the Brno Alligators, knocked off the A League’s last place team, the Havířov Devils, 40–0 July 14. The convincing win moves the Gators into the top division for 2008, while Havířov will be relegated to B league play. Brno quarterback Pavel Motůz riddled the Devils for five touchdown passes.
ROWING Ondřej Synek is leading the World Cup’s overall standings in the men’s scull competition. Having won two previous World Cup events, Synek finished third in a race in Lucerne, Switzerland, July 15, securing his position.
TENNIS The Czech women’s tennis team failed to qualify for the Fed Cup’s World Elite group after losing its July 14–15 qualifier in Spain 4–1. The Czechs were without its No. 1 player, Nicole Vaidišová, who fell ill with mononucleosis.
DEBACLE The Slovan Liberec soccer team was upset by Kazakhstan’s Tobol Kostanaj in the second round of the Intertoto summer soccer tournament. Having tied in the away leg 1–1 one week before, Slovan unexpectedly lost the July 15 home game 2–0. As a result, Slovan lost a chance to qualify to the UEFA Cup next season.
COMEBACK Aston Villa soccer midfielder Patrik Berger has said he wants to return to the Czech national team. Berger, 34, has 44 caps on the national team and has scored 18 goals for the country. He withdrew from the team in 2001. His agent, Pavel Paska, said Berger is now ready to accept an invitation from the national team.
NEDVĚD Soccer midfielder Pavel Nedvěd announced he would continue playing with Juventus in Italy’s Serie A league. Nedvěd, who has played with the club for six years, was recently arguing about his salary with Juventus’ management. His wage will rise from last season’s 76 million Kč ($3.7 million) to 105 million Kč.
SPEEDWAY The Markéta speedway track in Prague 6–Břevnov will once again become a venue of a Grand Prix event featuring the world’s top motorcyclists. The race will start July 28 at 7 p.m.
NHL For the first time ever, the NHL will kick off its season in Europe. The Stanley Cup’s defending champions, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, will take on the Los Angeles Kings in two games to be played in London, England, Sept. 29 and 30.
