WIMBLEDON Czech players Tomáš Berdych and Nicole Vaidišová impressed in men’s and women’s singles this week. Berdych advanced to the quarterfinal, where he was halted by Spain’s Rafael Nadal. Vaidišová also advanced to the quarters. ŠMICER Czech soccer international Vladimír Šmicer is getting ready for a comeback to Slavia Praha. Šmicer left Slavia in 1996 for French Racing Lens, and he later transferred to Liverpool and then back to France to Girondins Bordeaux. The 34-year-old midfielder said if he does not receive an attractive offer from abroad, he’ll stay with Slavia.SOFTBALL The men’s softball team defended its European championship title in a tournament that ended in Beveren, Belgium, July 8. In the final game, the Czechs beat Denmark 2–0. It’s the fifth European title for the team in the championship’s eight-year history.HOCKEY Veteran hockey goaltender Dominik Hašek has agreed on a new one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings that will earn him $2 million per season. The 42-year-old enters his 16th season in the NHL this year.TRANSFERS Some national soccer team players are giving boosts to major European clubs. Midfielder Jan Polák is set to transfer from German Bundesliga’s Nuremberg to Belgium’s Anderlecht. Meanwhile, defender Radoslav Kováč, who played over the past two seasons with Russia’s Spartak Moscow, is reportedly being eyed by Italy’s Inter Milan.BASKETBALL Forward Radoslav Rančík of ČEZ Basketball Nýmburk was named Mattoni NBL Most Valuable Player for the 2006–07 season. Petr Benda (A Plus Brno) finished second in MVP voting. BASEBALL The Czech national baseball team travels to Beijing next month to participate in an Olympic test series against Japan, France and the host squad.
