ARRESTS A member of an elite Czech military unit is among three suspects in connection with the death of a German man killed in west Bohemia in early June, Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported June 22. The 35-year-old victim was robbed, killed and his body cut into pieces and buried, police said. The suspect, who serves in Žatec, north Bohemia, was arrested along with another man and a woman. PLANE CRASH Three Czechs were among 22 people on a plane that disappeared in Cambodia June 25, ČTK reported. The Cambodian PMT Air flight is believed to have crashed in an area of dense jungle. The Foreign Affairs Ministry said the victims, two men and a woman, were between the ages of 19 and 21, but would not release their identities. DNA The Police Presidium is planning to beef up the national DNA database by taking samples from criminals convicted of violent crimes, Prima TV reported June 25. Experts disagree on whether DNA can be taken from criminals without their consent. Ombudsman Otakar Motejl said samples should not be taken by force. LAWSUIT City Hall will sue trade unions for setting up a speaking platform on Wenceslas Square during labor protests June 23, daily Mladá fronta Dnes reported June 26. The unions had permission to protest but not to set up the stage, City Hall said.RULING The Prague Municipal Court ruled June 25 to cancel the verdict in the case of Jan Antonín Baťa, brother of the founder of the Baťa shoe company, who was convicted in absentia in 1947 for collaborating with the Nazis. His nephew, Tomáš Baťa, 91, testified that the trial had been politically manipulated, ČTK reported. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair formally handed over leadership of the Labour Party June 24 to Chancellor Gordon Brown, setting off his resignation process after 10 years in power. Blair announced in May that he would first hand over party leadership and then formally resign his post June 27. SPAIN Three Spanish peacekeeping soldiers were killed in Lebanon June 24 in a car bomb explosion, the Associated Press reported. Three Colombian peacekeepers were also killed. The six victims were members of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, which combines soldiers from 30 countries.GAZA A new video of kidnapped British journalist Alan Johnston was released June 25 showing him wearing what appears to be an explosives vest, the BBC reported. In the video, he says his captors will detonate it if attempts are made to free him by force. Johnston, a BBC correspondent, was abducted March 12 by a group calling itself the Army of Islam.ITALY The Italian government says Mafia-related killings have fallen to their lowest level in decades, Reuters reported June 21. The number of homicides related to the mob numbered 121 in 2006, compared to 340 in 1992, statistics show. Italian authorities attribute the change to a Mafia decision of keeping a low profile.FRANCE Fifteen people were convicted in Paris June 22 of embezzling $1.3 million from Eiffel Tower ticket sales from 1996 to 2002 by taking advantage of a register malfunction. The people, all former cashiers, were ordered to pay $940,000 in damages and fines and were given suspended jail sentences.
