BRIEFS

BOHEMIANS With a 3-1 victory over HFK Olomouc June 11, Prague’s Bohemians 1905 secured a return to the top national soccer division, the Gambrinus liga. Prague will have four teams in the top division next year, up from two this year (Slavia and Sparta), as Viktoria Žižkov will also be moving up.

TENNIS The Czech team of Pavel Vízner and Lukáš Dlouhý made it to the men’s doubles finals at the French Open tennis tournament, which ended in Paris June 10. The pair lost the Grand Slam final to Daniel Nestor of Canada and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas in three sets June 9. En route to the final, the Czechs defeated the world’s No. 1 tennis team, U.S. twins Bob and Mike Bryan.
DISQUALIFIED The Association of Professional Hockey Clubs (APK) has disqualified HC Vsetín from the country’s top-flight Extraliga. The APK announced June 6 that Vsetín’s ongoing financial woes were at the root of the decision. Vsetín, a six-time champion, makes history by becoming the first team to be relegated from the Extraliga because of money.
COACH The national soccer team’s assistant coach, Jaroslav Šilhavý, will take a coaching job in the Gambrinus liga next season. Šilhavý has agreed to a deal with Kladno.
BASKETBALL The Nymburk basketball team won its fourth consecutive title in the Mattoni NBL. Nymburk secured the trophy by defeating Prostějov 98–74 June 10. The team swept the best-of-five series.
CAPTAIN The captain of the Slavia Praha soccer team, Lukáš Jarolím, will leave the team to play in the Italian Serie A next season. The 30-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year contract with AC Siena.
POLO Levín, a farm in central Bohemia, became the venue for the first polo tournament in the Czech Republic June 9. The event was organized by the Sal Oppenheim bank and was not open to the public.
SAZKA The Senate passed a new lottery law June 7 that will cancel the refunds the Sazka lottery company gets from value-added tax payments. The duty to pay VAT was imposed on Sazka two years ago, and the company — which is the country’s largest sports sponsor — cut the annual 1 billion Kč ($475.7 million) in subsidies it pays to sports associations by about 25 percent. Sazka has warned that, with this new law, subsidies to sports will have to be cut again.
OPEN Argentinian Sergio Roitman won the Czech Open tennis tournament in Prostějov, central Moravia, June 10. Roitman defeated Germany’s Florian Mayer in the finals. The tournament was a farewell event for Jiří Novák, the longtime No. 1 Czech player, who lost in the second round.
