Bohemians 1905, rescued from ruin by fans, may win promotion to top division

DRAW The national soccer team tied Wales 0–0 in a June 2 Euro 2008 qualifier at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. It was the farewell appearance for Welsh captain Ryan Giggs on the international circuit. After seven games, the Czechs rank second behind Germany in their seven-member round-robin group.

TENNIS Nicole Vaidišová was the only Czech player remaining in the singles round of the French Open, taking place in Paris May 27–June 10. Vaidišová advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s tourney after defeating Italy’s Tathiana Garbin, 6–3, 6–1, June 3. She was next scheduled to take on Jelena Janković of Serbia June 5.

FALL Biker Lukáš Pešek fell off his motorcycle in the late stages of a Moto GP race in Mugello, Italy, June 3, and it cost him the lead in the overall standings of the 125cc category. Pešek ranks third after six races, with 11 races remaining this season.
JÁGR New York Rangers captain Jaromír Jágr said after his June 3 arrival in his homeland that next season could be his last in the NHL. “My contract with the Rangers expires, and if they don’t exercise the option, it could be my last season in the NHL,” he said. The 35-year-old said he could return to play in Europe, and also did not rule out playing for the Czech national team in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
COACH Stanislav Griga, former head coach of the Sparta Praha soccer team, will take over Gambrinus liga newcomer Viktoria Žižkov next season. Griga coached Sparta until last fall when he was replaced with Michal Bílek. Viktoria advanced to the Gambrinus liga after two years in the second division.
TRIATHLON Filip Ospalý celebrated a surprising victory in the Madrid triathlon, part of the World Cup held June 3. Ospalý outpaced home favorite Javier Gomez in the final 150 meters before the finish line. It was Ospalý’s third-ever win in a World Cup race.
AWARD Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech, Arsenal midfielder Tomáš Rosický and AC Milan defender Marek Jankulovski have been short-listed as candidates to win the Czech Golden Ball trophy for player of the year. The winner of the annual poll, decided by the country’s soccer journalists, will be announced in August.
