BRIEFS
INSTITUTIONS Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling expressed regret over her sharp criticism of caged beds for children in Czech psychiatric institutions, Mladá fronta Dnes reported June 1. Rowling’s criticism of the practice sparked an international uproar in 2004, prompting the removal of caged beds from institutions. Doctors claim patients need the beds to prevent injury. TEMELÍN Austrian legal experts concluded that international action against the Czech Republic over safety at Temelín nuclear plant is nearly impossible, the Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported June 4. Austria has again called for discussions with the government over questions about the plant’s safety. Austrian anti-nuclear activists have repeatedly blocked the border. WIRETAPS The government approved a legal amendment June 4 that tightens rules for police wiretapping. Justice Minister Jiří Pospíšil says the bill will allow people to find out they were bugged within a year after a case is closed, and possibly seek compensation. Police information shows that 4,130 phone numbers were wiretapped during the first half of last year.CRASH Two Czechs burned to death after an ultra-light airplane crashed in west Bohemia June 3, police told ČTK. The pilot, 46, died along with his passenger, said Václav Polívka, chairman of the Aviatik Klub. A witness saw the plane catch fire as it fell after taking off from the town of Chotěšov around 10 a.m. Polívka said bad weather could be to blame.DRUGS Detectives from the National Drug Brigade detained two men suspected of smuggling cocaine from South America. The June 1 arrests in Ostrava, north Moravia, come after a seven-month police operation dubbed “Mojito.” The Colombian citizen of Czech origin and a Czech accomplice could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
