BRIEFS

DOMINANT The Sparta Praha soccer team has become the first squad to win the country’s “double”— the Gambrinus liga and the Czech FA Cup. Following a 2–1 win over Jablonec in the Czech Cup final May 23, Sparta secured the top-division title May 28, beating Most 5–0. The Gambrinus title is the club’s seventh championship in a decade.

WORLD CUP The men’s national tennis team had an impressive campaign at the annual World Cup team competition in Düsseldorf, Germany. The squad, with Tomáš Berdych, Jan Hájek and Martin Damm, advanced to the final, where it lost to Argentina 2–1 May 26. En route to the final, the Czechs beat Spain, Belgium and Germany.
CHAMPION AC Milan defender Marek Jankulovski became the third Czech soccer player to win Europe’s most prestigious club competition: the Champions League. Jankulovski participated in Milan’s 2–1 win over Liverpool May 24 in Athens.
QUALIFIED After three years out, the Viktoria Žižkov soccer team has rejoined the top-flight Gambrinus liga. The team, based in Prague 3, secured the advance after beating Blšany 1–0 May 27. Another Prague team, Bohemians 1905, is ranked second in the league behind Žižkov, and there’s a good chance they will also join the Gambrinus liga. This season, Sparta and Slavia were the only Prague teams in the top division.
DIED Czech speedway rider Michal Matula died after crashing into a barrier during a May 27 race in Krosno, Poland. The 20-year-old biker raced with the Czech team PSK Markéta, which this year joined Poland’s second racing league.
CASTLE Prague Castle, the historic seat of kings and now the country’s president, will become a venue of the Tour de Ski event, a competition in cross-country sprints. The event will take place Dec. 30.
GOLF Viktor Skalle, a 23-year-old amateur golfer, is set to become the first Czech to attempt qualifying for the world’s most traditional tournament — the British Open. With a handicap of +0.2, Skalle will enter the first round of qualification to be played in the Royal Golf Club in Dublin July 3.
STEEPLECHASE Organizers of the 117th edition of the Grand Pardubice Steeplechase, Europe’s most grueling horse race, announced they’ve received massive interest from horses’ owners in the Oct. 14 race. The lineup should feature the two winning horses from the past two races, and also the Irish horse Star Performance.
LEADER After five races, Czech biker Lukáš Pešek continues to lead the 125cc category in this season’s Moto GP series. Pešek finished second in a race in Le Mans, France, and has a nine-point standings advantage over Gabor Talmacsi of Hungary. The season’s sixth race is in Mugello, Italy, June 3.
COMEBACK Driver Tomáš Enge made a victorious comeback to the U.S. Le Mans Series May 20, where he won the GT2 category in Salt Lake City. Enge had a serious accident in March in Florida and had to undergo surgery for a fractured elbow.
