Businesses are jumping to get the .eu Web address suffix for better access to European markets

  • ADSL -
  • Český Telecom (ČT) will invest 150 million Kč ($6.5 million) this year into expanding its ADSL network to make the high-speed Internet service available at all schools, libraries and other public institutions, even in the most remote parts of the country, ČT announced April 24. The company wants its ADSL network to cover 98 percent of the country, said CEO Jaime Smith.

  • AGENCY -
  • The government is considering establishing a National Technology Agency that would cooperate with the economic sector, Prime Minister Jiří Paroubek said April 20 at a meeting at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The agency would focus on scientific research and development. Government expenditures on research and development increased 41 percent between 2000 and 2005.

  • ACQUISITION -
  • Grisoft, the Czech company best known for developing the AVG anti-virus software, has bought Ewido Networks, a German security program supplier, for an undisclosed amount. Established in 1991, Grisoft has headquarters in Brno, south Moravia, and the United States. Two investment groups bought 65 percent of the company for $52 million (1.2 billion Kč) last year.

  • ENERGY -
  • Czech company Energo-pro will participate in the construction of two hydroelectric power plants in Turkey, an investment of approximately 600 million Kč, the company announced April 19. The two plants should become operational in mid-2007, and Energo-pro expects a return on investment within seven years.

  • FLAT -
  • Jaime Smith, CEO of ČT, said that fewer than half a million people are expected to sign up for the company's new flat-rate calling service for 760 Kč a month. He also said that a flat rate for fixed-to-mobile calling is in long-term development but that such a product for families could be launched as early as this year.

  • sales -
  • Software company Aquasoft saw sales increase 8 percent to 118 million Kč in 2005 and expects them to reach 150 million Kč this year, the company announced April 19. Acquasoft was established in 1996 and employs more than 100 people. It has more than 75,000 clients.

  • digital -
  • TV music channel Óčko recently said the arrival of nationwide digital broadcasting will raise its annual operating costs from 50 million to 200 million Kč. It added that it will likely add sports programming to its music broadcasts.
