Taming taxes online
The government is hoping a new online tax system for businesses will make the collection process more efficient

BRIEFS


TEST - State inbound investment agency CzechInvest has created an online test to help businesses evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. The test focuses on marketing, human resources, production financing and financial management.

GROWTH - Fixed-line operator Český Telecom (ČT) is likely to see its net profit grow 16 percent in 2005 despite a drop in consolidated sales, according to analysts. ČT will announce the results Feb. 23 after the closing bell of the Prague Stock Exchange. Analysts are predicting ČT's profit to be around 6.5 billion Kč ($273.1 million) on 60.3 billion Kč in sales, which is 3 percent lower than last year.

INTERNET - ­­­­Broadband Internet use is growing fast here and throughout the European Union thanks to the growing popularity and falling prices of ADSL access, according to an analysis published by the European Commission Feb. 20. Last June the country registered approximately 36,000 ADSL connections. In October, the figure was 252,000.

HEADQUARTERS - Siemens is looking for a good location to build a new Prague headquarters, out of which the company's 1,200 Czech Republic employees would work, Euro reported Feb. 19. The company has not set a date for when its headquarters will be moved. The project will be one of the most significant in office construction in the next few years, according to the report.

SCREENS - The financial situation at the LG Philips Displays plant in Hranice, north Moravia, which had to stop production last month because it ran out of money, has stabilized. As a result, the company does not need a loan from the government to protect the investment, Industry and Trade Minister Milan Urban said Feb. 19.

SALES - Sales at Et netera, a software company, increased 60 percent this year, thanks to an increase in demand for e-business solutions from new clients such as electronics retailer Datart and fixed-line provider Český Telecom. The company designs Internet portals and Web sites, among other things. Retail chain Ahold and mobile operator Eurotel are also its clients.

MOBILE - The Czech Republic has one of the highest rates of mobile phone penetration in the European Union, according to data published by the European Commission Feb. 20. Penetration exceeded the country's population by 5 percent in October, placing it in fifth place that month in the EU.
