The economic crisis is tough, but successful reforms before the crisis mean that employers and employees aren't necessarily left high and dry

Train workers striked in the middle part of the UK on Sunday and busses were used by the train company, Sunday was deemed a volunteer day; paid at double the days rate. That has been withdrawn; resulting in no volunteers to work for the same rate as a say a Monday. throughout the UK pay cuts; 4 day weeks and many other job saving intitives are currently helping ride out the worst of the recession. New graduates are finding positions very hard to obtain as management cut back on expenditure. The future of work is being re-evaluated by the realities of the recession and maybe new ideas will be good when things are a bit better. Got to be optomistic, misery is optional.

The similar scheme as noted in this article is used in Canada. In fact,in my present employment we are encouraged by our employer to take an advantage of it.The fifth day in the week is paid by government-although at 60% of regular pay. Many people are using this to their advantage.
The other side of it is that it does not really create a new jobs, rather it allows an employer to shift the load to the rest of the employees.

I guess that for a short period of time it is OK.

In another matter.I hope that Starbucks in their desire to expand to other cities of Czech Republic will do a thorough survey of business climate and research the trends of consumption of general population before doing that. While Prague itself is relativelly large enough to support Starbucks with yuppie clientele, there are far less of them in the rest of the country.
Many parts of country population is making only 12-15 thousands koruns/month.
How many can really afford to spend on relativelly expensive cup of coffee?
