More than meets the ear

If Borat were a Slovenian singer, his name would be Magnifico.

Robert Pešut, better known by his stage name, Magnifico, has taken the Slovenian music world by storm with his unique blend of funk, disco, Balkan, electro and hip-hop sung in a hybrid of English and Slovenian. Magnifico, along with his ensemble, which seems to have been cobbled from the remnants of several mariachi bands, rock groups, ethno-drum circles and a few go-go dancers, burst onto the Slovenian music scene in 1993 and has since released 10 albums, including 2010's Magnification.

Magnifico's major breakthrough came in 2002, when Slovenia was preparing for the Eurovision song contest. One of Magnifico's songs, titled "Samo Ljubezen," or "Only Love," was chosen from hundreds of entries to become the Slovenian selection for the contest, but the song set off widespread protests when it was sung by a trio of transvestites on international television.

The stunt touched a nerve among Slovenes and even led to a debate in Parliament about whether the song should be allowed to represent the country. Magnifico brushed the controversy off with a knowing grin, and therein lies his charm: Much like Borat, one can never be completely sure if Magnifico's act is ironic.

"I try to do something unique and different, but it doesn't work. So I think a music style comes naturally or it doesn't come at all," he tells The Prague Post.

Magnifico's music videos for songs like "Giv Mi Mani," by which he means "Give Me Money," from the 2005 album Export Import, employ all the "bling bling" symbols of American rap videos: scantily clad women washing sports cars, gold chains and plenty of champagne, among other objects of decadence and desire. But there is a polyester, East European twist to these videos that elevates them to the level of intelligent parody.

During the refrain of "Giv Mi Mani," Magnifico sings "Giv mi mani, and I could be so fani, and you can call me hani, and I will call you hani bani." The lyrics aren't exactly words of wisdom, but the song is danceable and surprisingly catchy, almost despite itself. There is more to the singer's style than meets the ear, and Magnifico says his creative use of English is all part of the plan.

"I really like English because it is so open for communication that you can actually make your own English if you want, and nobody gets angry and everybody can understand you. So let's say that I sing in something we call 'Balklish' - Balkan English," he says.

Magnifico's homeland may not be a country Westerners associate with cutting-edge music, but there is a rich musical and cultural history in Slovenia, which in many ways is a crossroads between Europe and the Balkans. Musically, Slovenia is often associated with Laibach, the dramatic industrial band that has become legendary over the past three decades by toying with nationalist symbols and reconfiguring classic pieces of music, from The Beatles to Bach. Magnifico, with his parody of American musical glamour and decadence, takes a slightly different approach, employing intellectual parody, humor and pop. But there are deeper differences between Magnifico and other Slovenian musicians, and the singer says he has no interest in being a purely Slovenian star.  

"My national feeling is more or less dead - if I ever had any. So I see myself more like a world citizen from Slovenia. To be successful in Slovenia, you don't have to reach beyond the borders, you just have to be 100 percent Slovenian," he says.  

Magnifico's press statements and interviews are littered with doubletalk and irony, so it is difficult to tell where the performer ends and the person begins. In any case, the singer's strategy has been successful, allowing him to move from Slovenian clubs to West European concert halls and to branch out to other genres, including film. The singer recently finished recording the soundtrack for Montevideo bog te video, a big-budget Serbian film, and plans to begin work on a new album after completing his tour.
