So much sound

By usually weaving together gritty and angular post-bop, ethereal ballads, funky polyphonic rock grooves and spurts of loose dissonance with an overall soaring musicianship, the Donny McCaslin Group, playing Jazz Dock Monday, Jan. 28, is an early highlight of the year. The rising star tenor saxophonist of The Dave Douglas Quintet will be joined for this concert by the electric bassist Tim Lefebvre, the drummer Nate Wood and Matt Mitchell on piano, electric piano and synthesizer, touring to support their most recent release, last year's Casting For Gravity. This is a surprising foray into 1970s fusion jazz and experimental electronica à la the Aphex Twin, and the roaring cover of "Alpha and Omega" by Boards of Canada will surely bring down the house.
