Don't let the name confuse you. Sambasunda Quintet does not play samba, or anything close to jazz. The group is a Javanese collective, at times an orchestra, but pared down to a quintet for their Prague appearance. Led by breathtaking singer, poetess and dancer Rita Tila, the group has all the ingredients needed for gamelan arrangements, including the kacapi (a uniquely shaped zither), violin, suling (flute) and kendang drums. The group's sound is soulful, ancient and at the same time is a hauntingly modern psychedelia, influenced by the minimalism of Brian Eno as well as Claude Debussy.
