What has drinking deaths etc got to do with anything?? Alot..compare with smoking statistics....
Alcohol misuse accounts for more than 20,000 premature deaths per year, this includes cancer, liver disease and accidental injury.
There were 8,724 alcohol related deaths in 2007, lower than 2006, but more than double the 4,144 recorded in 1991.6
The alcohol-death rate is on the increase with 13.4 deaths per 100,000 population in 2006, representing a doubling since 1991.6 The risk increases once intake exceeds more than 3 drinks per day.4
In 2005 38.8% of drivers in injury road accidents were given an alcohol breath test and 2.7% failed it.
There were 11.6 casualties from road accidents involving illegal alcohol levels per 100,000 population in 2005.
There were 6,376 pedestrian casualties in London in 2004, drugs or alcohol was a contributory factor in approximately 200 (3.1%).
The British Crime Survey shows that for Britain as a whole in 2004/05, victims believed the offender to be under the influence of alcohol in 48% of violent crime. This varied by the type of crime e.g. mugging 17%, stranger violence 60%, domestic violence 53%. In the 12 months up to February 2006 the Metropolitan Police recorded a total of 202,314 crimes of violence against the person. If 48% of these are related to alcohol, then more than 97,000 alcohol-related violent offences occur in London every year.

There is also evidence that many victims of assault are also likely to have been drinking prior to the incident.

In 2006/07 there were 13.5 alcohol-related recorded crimes per 1000 population in London compared with 10.2 per 1000 in England. London's rate was higher than any other region in England. It also had the highest rate of violent crimes (9.0 per 1000, England 7.2 per 1000) and sexual offences (0.16 per 1000, England 0.14 per 1000).

you resent your health being affected by nicotine smokers?...i dont drive and resent my health being affected by cars...ban cars? Actually why not!!!
...im saying smoking pubs for smokers and smoking workers....and non smokers can have their pubs too....why cant we have both.......?
The arguement always used ..is the burden on the health service by smokers,,,,im saying the burden on the health service from drink related illnesses and accidents etc is higher,,,and drinking is ok..... In england now...we have cafe bars and restaurants..full of the middle classes...the trad pubs..where workers used to go are empty and closing down...the working classes stay at home...and drink really cheap alcohol from the supermarkets...smoke..and watch reality tv...so now only the middle classes go out...great.....pubs were a great place for meeting people...a central part of the community...now...gone.....

Thomas a film was made starring Leonard Rossiter as a 'stage farter' ; I recall seeing it at the movies many years ago. Well, enough of this hot air talk, must embrace the day.

Lightning has struck, and I am in agreement with Ms. Donaldson.

I was in the hospitality (wine, hotels, restaurants) business for many years in New York, Las Vegas and elsewhere. I've heard the "most (pub, restaurant, bar, etc) goers are smokers" argument for 20 years and it's nonsense. It's not true. Period.

First... smokers are not the majority in the UK, the US or even the Czech Republic. In the US and UK, smokers make up only about 22% of the population. In the Czech Republic, it's slightly higher. But, the percentages have been declining for decades.

It was heard in NYC when the smoking ban in bars and restaurants was put in place. "We'll lose business", etc. Funny, but business went up as people felt more comfortable eating in restaurants and going to bars where they could breathe.

When I was last in Rome, a tourguide gave a tip. "Look for restaurants where everyone is smoking outside, that's where the locals eat." I asked a couple of waiters about it, and they said they were making more money (tips) since the smokers went outside.

Casinos that put in no-smoking areas find that business increases. I worked for one of the biggest casino companies who converted the casino floor to 75% non-smoking and business increased.

>>They had many "health" research subject on, Ms.Peggy Mengele.

I am not sure what this "sentence" is supposed to mean. In any case, Mengele had nothing to do with this research.

Jan,
That's lovely.... perhaps after a few half-liters they could get a few in a group and try their rendition of Beethoven's Fifth.

Actually, there was a guy in the UK that could "play" tunes by flatulence. He went by the name of Mr. Methane. My former company "rented" his "act" for the company Christmas party a few years back...... It was, (for lack of a better word)... very interesting.

A new beer that you can drink and inhale nicotine is being launched. Pivo-Puff works by gulping the pivo and not exhaling for 7 seconds. The smoke is retained and expelled via flatulence that has added odour neutralisers. It costs 89kc a half litre; a pilot study is being undertaken at the 'Rattling benches' pub in Plzen.

>>most pub goers are smokers

Do you have any statistics on this? Or is this based on your experience outside a pub in Cornwall one Monday night?

I am not a smoker, and I resent my health being damaged because nicotine addicts are unable to suppress their drug addiction long enough to stop smoking while they are in public. Heroin injection is illegal in pubs - indeed, in some countries, it is even illegal to smoke cannabis. The very least we can expect is a total ban on smoking in public places.

>>how many people die from alcohol related illnesses, driving accidents, domestic abuse etc

What has this got to do with anything?

>>The first state to introduce non-smoking regulations? Nazi Germany!

Indeed. And also the first state to do any research into the link between smoking and lung cancer.

Well.. cannot agree with it. I'm smoker for 15 years but I do support idea of non-smoking pubs.. not to protect non-smokers but to protect us who smoke too many cigs.. I spent quite a lot of time in UK and US working - it is true, you need cigarette so much with your drink, but do you really need 20, 25?. 30 per night? Going out makes you (want it or not) smoking less.. Might piss me off during the night but it makes me happy day after : )
Think about it...

to have a total ban on smoking is crazy. In the Uk thousands of small traditional pubs have gone under and only the horrible chain pubs are benefiting. At Xmas i was in a small pub in Cornwall on a monday night...snowing. All twenty customers were outside in a heated area...inside empty...most pub goers are smokers..there is room for both...non smoking and smoking pubs.(This worked well for years in Cambridge) In my mountain village. on week days in the winter the only people in there are farmers etc who all smoke....as to 5600 people dieing of lung cancer...how many people die from alcohol related illnesses, driving accidents, domestic abuse etc?? The first state to introduce non-smoking regulations? Nazi Germany! Say no to ashism!!
