Karel Kandr�� surveys the upper floor of his home, where he lives with his wife and two sons. The attic space has been a source of concern as rotting beams and general disrepair have caused parts of it to collapse.

Franti�ek �iga and his girlfriend show one of the rooms in their dilapidated home, which his illiterate mother was forced to buy in Vl�ice. The trash and clothes were from the previous tenants.

Franti�ek �iga looks over the hole in the floor where his toilet stands. Though it is nonfunctional, the family has no choice but to use the facilities and �iga, whose skin has broken out in a rash, must shovel the excrement that backs up.

Franti�ek �iga believes his skin rash was caused by shoveling the excrement that backs up from the home he shares with his family. At the age of 22, he has become the man of the house because his father can no longer deal with the stress and abandonded the family with a mortgage they can ill afford. �iga was told by local doctors that his condition is nothing serious.

�ofia Kandr��ova contemplates her future in the house where her children have become sick. Kandr��ova, who is illiterate was forced to sign a mortgage costing her 430,000 K�, now has a residence with no potable water that is falling down around them.

The Kandr��'s new house in Star� �erven� Voda is crumbling, one barn has completely fallen and a second barn (pictured) is about to collapse.

Karel Kandr�� and Em�lie look into their bathroom, where exposed wires and an improperly grounded electrical system shocked his 3-year-old granddaughter as she touched a heater.

Adri�n, 6, stands near the back of the house where a broken sewage pipe backs up, causing flooding. The waste must be regularly shoveled away from the house.

�ofia Kandr��ova shows how polluted water the house receives has caused rashes on her children.
