EnviMin will distribute 172 million carbon credits, most go to ČEZ

Prague, Jan 21 (ČTK) — The Czech Environment Ministry is going to allot about 172 million carbon credit to industrial companies for the period 2013–20, and their amount will gradually decrease by each year, ministry spokesman Matyáš Vitík told ČTK.

The European Commission (EC) decided on the allocation of free-of-charge carbon credits for Czech industrial enterprises that are included in the Emissions Trading System (ETS) last week.

The Czech Republic thus became another EU member state that managed to obtain a positive decision by the EC regarding the proposal for carbon credit distribution.

One carbon credit is allotted per metric ton of carbon dioxide.

CO2 quotas have been set in the EU until 2020. The 2013-2020 period is the third stage of emission trading with new rules of free allotment of carbon credits to all energy utilities and other companies creating air pollution that are part of the EU ETS system.

In the Czech Republic, this applies to about 350 companies.

According to Vitík, the allotment of carbon credits is a positive piece of news for medium-term planning of companies.

The biggest part of carbon credits is to go to the state-run energy utility ČEZ.

The Environment Ministry has already launched the process of issuing decisions on allocation to individual enterprises. After they come into effect, the Electricity Market Operator (OTE) will allocate the carbon credits to the operators' accounts.

Allocations for 2014 and forthcoming years could take place by the end of February, the ministry said.
