Science and humanism)- In the U.K. when the P.C. reveloution arrived there was a push to put science in education as a priority to help in the economic times. Within this article the language of 'commercial returns' hints that education should have a pathway to measurable returns. Of course; science and industry are cornerstones of any economic system. What seemed to be sidelined was the fall in physical education; sports; and many of the arts as well as foriegn languages. The minor point I am tring to highlight is that government in its concerns to educate for a strong economy may forget the contribution of a diverse subject base. At least in the C.R. the appreciation of the arts is at a higher level than some areas of the E.U.. The presures that many young people feel to be 'sucsessful'in personal economic terms is understandable; study choice is often economic job driven.
I just hope that in education; the choice of subject is not narrowed and limited by government desire to fund only subjects that will 'perform' well economicly. The health of a nation is also well served when liesure time has a wide selection of art that reflects the society that people live in. Fast food; celebrity television; pc electronic games may well be part of an economy; but at what price in health terms?
