Dear Peter, please contact agricultural dept of U.K. whom I am sure will appreciate your busisness plan. The price of wine (wine lakes) butter(butter mountains) have a history of price fixing.Im not a buisness man; I struggle to budget for toilet roll. I,m just highlighting the way the E.U. tries to be fair in production capicity. Different internal taxes on many products(alcohol/tobacco/ and monpolies (washing powder!) . When one country discovers it has a new product ,say Czech white wine(Moravia) or red; and flood the wine market; the French will go apeshit; A bottle of Plzen beer in UK is approx 65kc; packof Marloborogh 20 cigs 154kc, so Brits get plastered drunk in Praha and smoke until they peuk the beer up. So here we have rich diversity of culture;being European means understanding market insanity. In some ways it proves more interesting than having everything McDonaldized; Ive grown to wise to ever expect European integration American style. Farmers here are encouraged to diversify income, bed&breakfast; different crops, local markets, organic specials; lama farming; the 'green industry' oils for energy. Also cow flatulence is a well known greenhouse emission; and that just has to be curbed.

>>In the UK some farmers pour milk down the drain, they cant get a fair price.

There is no such thing as a "fair" price: a commodity is worth whatever anyone is prepared to pay for it. If they have to pour milk down the drain then there is obviously over-production. Perhaps they should switch to something more profitable, like any normal business would.

In the UK some farmers pour milk down the drain, they cant get a fair price. The domination of price, through supermarket buyers; who; as the article points out; make 'basic foods' at below market price. The result is more customers shop with them. Soon we will only have 1 shop in the E.U. a sort of multi IKEA that sells all from milk, condoms, and haircuts.
Welcome to E.U. market policies.......
