" I like people and people like me, so little by little I started building a network of friends and acquaintances that grew into a community that I think would be hard to build back home in the States."

Why not?
You can(and most of people do) find a circle of friends in any country. It just depend on individual's interest and life style.
I am happy for you that you are maturing. We all had to go through these phases of life.

I arrived here in 1998 in hopes of living two years after graduating university of debauchery and bliss. Along came the reality of having to pay bills and actually making something of your life, so I got serious and said eh, let's try my luck here. I like people and people like me, so little by little I started building a network of friends and acquaintances that grew into a community that I think would be hard to build back home in the States. Czechs like to be seen and "who you know" is really important here. I think that helps the social fabric here, even if that statement may sound contrary to what many believe. The one effect I know I have at work is bringing the American work ethic to it. Staying after hours, doing things you're not necessarily paid to do, standing up to authority and saying "I'll see what I can do" when you actually thinking "Are you nuts?" all are part of it and I think it adds value to any company here. Speaking fluent Czech doesn't hurt. What I don't get is how the cost of living is on par with or just below the West, yet employers aren't keeping up with salary requirements. I guess it's getting there, but it'll still take some time to get past that frame of mind. Anyway, on my 10th year here. The debauchery's over (well... perhaps relived once or twice a year), but I'm still having a good time.

Dear Mr. Delbos,

I always enjoy your articles, and this one was most interesting, but it would be also interesting to see a story on employment and the market that included the non Czech job seeker, their effect on the society, who they are, and how they came to be here, in the Czech Republic.
