Viktoria Plzeň will open their newly renovated stadium when they host Schalke 04 in UEFA Europa League next month. It should be a special occasion for fans young and old but many are threatening not to turn up due to their extremely high ticket prices.
The cheapest ticket starts at 1200kc and rises all the way to 2000kc for the matchup with the Germans on Feb. 16. Fans will understand that playing against Barcelona and AC Milan in the Champions League will come at a higher price than the domestic league, but playing Europa League against Schalke shouldn’t warrant the same prices.
“The price we discussed a lot. Award twelve hundred crowns for the sectors we set a goal just with respect to our flag-bearer, who instead chose the northern grandstand for his,” said club spokesman Pavel Pillar. “Price is always a sensitive issue, but we think this match is comparable to the Champions League, both the importance and attractiveness. Moreover, it is a game that opens the stadium.”
Viktoria Plzeň had been playing their Champions League clashes at Eden (Slavia Praha stadium) whilst work was being carried out on their own stadium in Plzeň. But fans are disappointed about the pricing policy for the game against Schalke.
It was a similar scenario to the Sparta Prague vs. Liverpool match last year where the Czech club bumped the prices up to capitalize on the visit of the English side. Liverpool even filed a complaint with UEFA about Sparta’s pricing policy – some Liverpool fans were charged up to 4200kc for the match in Prague.
The UEFA Europa League game between Viktoria Plzeň and Schalke 04 takes place on Thursday 16 February with tickets going on sale from Monday 30 January.
