My trip to U Staré Studny happened a bit by accident – I had been planning to go to a different wine bar in the area that ended up being closed, and stumbled across this place. It had the looks of prettier version of your underground cave bar, but the menu and its location are what really set it apart.
Located at Tržiště 3 near Malostranské náměstí, at first glace I was just happy to find a place in that part of town that I feel like is a dependable go to to just relax and have a reasonable glass of wine. The menu includes local Moravian wines, but also wines from France, Italy, South America and California for prices between 22 kc and 60 kc per deciliter.
But looking closer at the alcohol menu, it boasts a generous list of beverages that aren’t that easy to find. They have 33 different types of Cognac, and more than a dozen types of Pineau des Charentes, which is another type of fortified wine that is made using eau de vie, a fruit brandy. It’s usually pretty hard to find Pineau des Charentes outside of France, so it is an exciting find for the classier types.
In addition, the menu offers more traditional spirits, like Slivovice, whiskey, gin and what have you.
The atmosphere is friendly, quiet and overall pleasant. However, the smoking area, which is located in the lower part of the bar is pretty stuffy and sort of smells like fresh air never makes it down there. I would describe it as the smell of an old cellar, or to be more frank, gym socks. But like any other vaguely unpleasant smell, one soon forgets about it until they emerge into the fresh air, so it didn’t end up being that bothersome.
Food-wise, there are some interesting choices for snacks. Me and my accomplice ordered a pate that was delicious and hearty.
The wait staff were extremely pleasant, and one of the bartenders downstairs informed me (unsolicited) that U Staré
Studny has events from time to time, including wine and sushi tastings. More information about that can be found on their website, and if you’re really interested, you can ask them to be put on an email list for updates.
Currently, the wine bar’s website is advertising an exhibition of photography by Robert Van through May 30.
