So I know I said I was going to write about American Bar today… but, I went, and it was closed. So we will travel from the beautiful architecture and ambiance of Obecní dům to a tiny not-so-nice bar with some of the cheapest beer in Prague 1.
Minirest at Havlíčkova 6 – it’s just one of those places, apparently. It’s a smoke filled unpretentious respite to the touristy and high priced area it’s in, and it’s sort of an enigma of how it continues to exist smack dab in the middle of probably expensive real estate. It’s sort of like if you’re walking around Prague 1 and you get a hankering for Žižkov you can just duck in here real quick to get your fix.
There’s nothing exciting about it, other than it’s actually really mini, and the prices are super low. But it has a draw to it that I’ve heard more than one person talk about, like it’s just one of those staples in their late nights. In fact, I’ve been told Gordon Ramsey’s chefs from the super nice restaurant Maze when it
was still open made this place home.
It’s above ground, which for some reason has been something of major appeal for me the past couple weeks, and has about five or six little tables that you squish around. There was a token couple of old men reminiscing and smoking over a shared bottle of wine, and then just those coming in and out to grab a drink on the way somewhere else or while waiting for the rest of the party to start.
The service was good too – in fact, our bartender/waiter made sure we were always filled up and then even insisted that we could use another when we were pretty sure we couldn’t. So that’s always nice. Certainly not what I was planning on for that night, but a good find.
