It’s getting chilly out and I’ll have to admit navigating Prague’s cobblestone streets in the rain is not at the top of my fun list. So last week on a particularly unpleasant night, a friend and I stayed in and decided to try our hand at making our own mulled wine – it was super easy and really tasty. There are a ton of variations in how to make this, but this worked out pretty well for us.
So for your own rainy cold night entertainment, I present here our own take on the recipe:
- One bottle of inexpensive red wine
- A handful of cinnamon sticks broken in half
- A smattering of cloves
- Juice – I would recommend something like cranberry or apple
- Lemon
- Brandy (if you want to make it an exciting night in)
So then you just pour all the wine, cinnamon sticks, cloves, a little bit of juice – (I would say around half a cup) – some cut lemon wedges, into a pot, and warm it up SLOWLY on low heat. Don’t let it bubble or boil… You should just do all these ingredients to taste, because it’s sort of a personal thing… some people like more or less spice, etc…
Once it’s sufficiently warm, it’s ready to drink. Now here’s the point of the brandy – when you warm up wine, it loses some of its alcohol content, so I would recommend glugging a little bit of brandy in there to suit your taste just to achieve whatever desired effect you want while you watch your romantic comedy, or warm up near the fire place…
