Themed bar nights are totally hit or miss – and it’s pretty rare to find one where people are actually into it, so when I went to the 80s night at Casa Andina on Dušní I was blown away by how successful it was in a) getting a bunch of people in really embarrassing outfits and b) getting them to dance en masse quite terribly but very happily.
It really comes down to a level of trust, which apparently the partygoers of Andina have created, because the thing about themed parties is that a lot of the time no one dresses up, because no one wants to show up and be the only one. But I feel pretty confident in saying if you choose to go to this weekly shindig one Friday, you will not be alone in your leotard and sparkly headband – these 80’s lovers were committed. We’re talking like 100 people by the end of the night in shiny bright pink leggings pants and legwarmers, side ponytails, shoulder pads – the works.
The DJ did a good job overall playing all the stuff you’ve got to have at an 80s party but without getting too cheesy – the only problem was there were some points were 70s, 90s, and even post Y2K music made its way into the mix.
The dance floor was by far the most active I have seen in a long time, and while in the beginning it was mostly girls practicing the signature 80s hands partially up, eyes closed-swoop left-swoop right, by around 1 a.m. when we left there was everyone dancing – from 50-something-year-old ladies to teenage boys.
The other great thing was that it was kind of an equal mix of locals and expats, which can be hard to find, as most places are either decidedly one or the other.
Surprisingly, the bar downstairs where the party was didn’t serve any beer – but mixed drinks were only 50 Kč, which is quite a good deal if they’re mixed correctly. Unfortunately, the only negative thing I have to say about the whole night was the bar service –weak drinks from a rather unhappy looking bar tender.
