I can only fathom how the idea for Bed Lounge was conceived - some guy was laying in his bed on a Friday night with his phone beeping with text messages to go out, and he just thought to himself, man,we’ve been to the moon, we’ve built the pyramids, why the heck hasn’t someone figured out a way for me to continue to lie here AND go out.
And then there was Bed Lounge – where you can lay down in a bed with nice fluffy pillows, AND smoke and drink cocktails with friends. The lounge, located in Old Town Square, is one of those places that sells on novelty. Of course, the most obvious part is instead of chairs or benches, the seating is of mattresses and pillows with white mesh curtains swathing the place. But the reason, in my opinion, it works is because the novelty doesn’t stop there – parts of the drink menu are quite off the beaten track.
For me, the most exciting part is there’s an entire section of the menu dedicated to juleps – yup that’s right, get on your seersucker suit and a sophisticated Southern drawl, there are mint juleps in Prague. The traditional mint julep, as any good Southerner knows, involves a bunch of sugar and mint leaves crushed on ice – it’s not really something one finds outside of the South East United States, and I certainly wasn’t expecting to find that here in the center of Europe.
In addition, they’ve got another section of fun drinks – bubble cocktails. It’s a range of cocktails all made with sparkling French wine, according to the menu, which I can only assume is a bad translation for champagne, or it’s fake champagne – but whatever it is, it certainly makes for a cool cocktail.
The reason I thought this lounge was calling for me to write about it was I was walking in Old Town Square on a Friday night, not even thinking about writing or nightlife, and I just had to go in to take a peek – in a city filled with old stone and brick, the completely white interior shaded by purple and pink lights creates this sort of exclusive aura that makes you think there could be really important people inside having exclusive foam champagne parties or something. But in fact, there weren’t very important people or parties inside. There was a handful of people (one looked like he was literally going to nap), and it was around 10:45 p.m. It was a little bit of a let down, I have to admit, but I guess mattresses and pillows don’t really make for a high-energy atmosphere.
But nevertheless, I would definitely consider going there with a group of friends to mix things a little – it’s a nice atmosphere for meeting up, not really partying it up. There are two floors to the lounge – the only real difference is downstairs is non-smoking, which is nice for people who are fed up with smelling like smoke every time they go out.
The prices for cocktails, are well, nice cocktail prices. Juleps are 170 Kč, bubble cocktails 150 Kč. Then there’s a bundle of other cocktails – manhattans, old fashioneds, mojitos, etc, all between 150 Kč and 170 Kč, in addition to beer and wine. They have a kitchen that stays open until midnight which serves a range of very non-Czech food, like steak with green beans and parmesan, mozzarella with cherry tomatoes, fettucine, and hamburgers – those prices range between 150 Kč for the hamburger and 285 Kč for the steak. However, the friendly promoter told me the owners of the lounge also own Mama Mia’s next door, so customers could order from there if they really wanted to.. which has a kitchen that is open later.
