Video: Czech artists put safety first with DIY cycle lane

Two Czech artists have created an usual way for bikers to travel safely, with a bicycle-mounted projector that displays a “cycle lane” in front of the rider.

Vladimir Turner and Ondřej Mladý filmed their experiment to make a short called “Safety First,” in which one rider cycles with the projector and a helmet camera while the other follows with a second camera. Check out their ephemeral bike path in action around Prague in the video below. More photos from the duo’s exhibition at Prague’s NTK gallery and from the making of the video are available at Flickr.com/signaler.

The feat makes a neat point of demonstrating the value of green transport infrastructure, even the actual road safety value of this novel concept remains to be seen, of course, if you can pardon the pun.

The Czech pair may not be the first with the idea, either, as according to Good magazine, a similar system using lasers called Light Lane was developed by designers from Altitute Inc based in Somerville, Massachusetts in 2009.
