The makers of the highly-regarded U.S. classical music TV series Keeping Score traveled to Jihlava here in the Czech Republic to film a new documentary about the life of Gustav Mahler.

Director Michael Tilson Thomas has said that, upon seeing the town itself, he decided to change the entire course of the documentary because he realized that the shape of the Czech composer’s home town mirrored the shape of his famous symphonies.

The two-part documentary coinciding with this Mahler’s centenary year is available now on DVD along with two concert performances by the San Francisco Symphony of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in full and selected movements from his other works.

The set of Mahler programs will be available to stream on demand for free at pbs.org after it airs on U.S. TV screens later in the summer. In the meantime, check out this behind-the-scenes video trailer.
