Yes Burger: Yeah, it’s good

Before I get down to things, I’d like to gleefully point out that by writing a second blog post on Yes Burger, I am trolling the trolls. Trolls, of course, being those commenters of blogs and web sites whose purpose seems only to antagonize the writer. Common examples include “you’re stupid,” “The Prague Post is amateurish and should die in a fiery car crash” or other such similar sentiments that do nothing to further useful discussion.

Some of you seem to have a swift and negative reaction to the hamburger topic, as it is overcooked, to put it one way. Well, for every one of you that hates it, there are five that enjoy it.

Ahem.

I went back to Yes Burger, a new restaurant in Zizkov. The burgers are tasty. They are not gourmet, they are not going to rock your hamburger-centric universe, but they’re good and they’re affordable. Your basic hamburger costs 55 crowns, and fancier versions don’t go above 85 crowns.

The Mexican came with jalapenos, cheddar, guacamole and the regular toppings and was only 100 crowns with a side of french fries. Not bad.

The Mexican

The bacon cheeseburger is also quite tasty and ran us only 65 crowns. That’s hard to beat.

What’s really neat about Yes Burger is its whole vibe. It really reminds of those unique little places that are stand-by’s in U.S. college towns and add a lot of character to a neighborhood.

It’s great to have that in Žižkov. The owners, two very kind twins, have decorated the place with unique displays of collectible cards and figurines, a touch that appeals to kids and adults of any age.

Old Czech Easter Cards

My boyfriend Matt had been felled by a cold and the poor lamb was in such a weakened state that he couldn’t walk down the hill to try it out himself (insert pitiful and dramatic coughs here). But he wasn’t so weak that he couldn’t actually EAT a delicious hamburger, so he gasped out a request that we bring him back one. The only problem was, I wasn’t ready to come home, and Cat Contiguglia and I were headed to U Sadu. Because we don’t have a buzzer system and we don’t have elevator privileges, my boyfriend and I have devised a basket system for delivering keys to visitors.

This night, the basket was tasked with a more important job. As passerby shot us strange looks Cat and I talked loudly of our shut-in friend, who was so consumed with grief over his dead hamster that he couldn’t even get it together to leave the house for food. Matt didn’t think it was that funny.

A decidedly inefficient method of cheeseburger retrieval

  1. I stopped by the other day and I must say that the bacon cheeseburger when it comes to value for money it’s hard to beat.

  2. Any chance you can give an address for said Burger Joint?

I forgot the most important part! It’s Seifertova 14, near the Husinecka tram stop on the 5, 9 and 26 lines.

  3. I realize the author of this piece will likely dismiss my comment as that of a “troll,” but the fact of the matter is…I look to the Prague Post each week for new and useful information on my community, particularly in regard to dining and nightlife.

What I suggest is a little variety instead of what appears to be an imbalanced, inappropriate — and, frankly, caustic — bias towards writing about burgers.

If we were living in Pittsburgh, fine. But I’d have the same reaction if I felt a Czech-based paper and site dedicated too much time, space, and effort to curry or pasta dishes (for example).

      I don’t think you’re trolling, Zach, I just absolutely can’t understand why it’s a problem.
Here’s why: I write two restaurant reviews per month as well as two food news columns(on top of my primary job as the Business Editor). Those reviews and food news columns are not, and have never been, overly-biased toward hamburger coverage. I can’t believe I just wrote that sentence.

This blog is extra. I write one blog post per week for the food blog and Fiona Gaze contributes a second one. If you look at last week, I wrote my regular Friday post about an Asian food store. The burger post was an extra I threw up the day before–I had the photos, so why not. Ditto on this week.
So these burger posts that are ‘imbalanced’ and ‘inappropriate’ in your opinion are not created in lieu of any of our regular coverage on the Prague food scene.

As for caustic, well, that’s my sense of humor. I know it strikes some people as prickly, but that’s always been my ‘voice.’ There is no better medium for being a bit sarcastic or playful than a blog. They are informal mediums, for the most part.

I hope you visit again on Friday, I’ll be posting photos I took at Yo! Sushi. I’ve also got a post brewing about online coupons, including Zdenek Pohlreich’s thoughts on the matter (he doesn’t hold back).
