If The Red Shoes isn’t quite so fevered as its modern counterpart (less lechery, less bleeding all over the place, less masturbating-in-front-of-mother scenes), it still expertly depicts the emotions of a lead ballerina, and tries to understand the obsessions that make the art of ballet become life itself to these girls.
