October last year, former Prague Post film and theater critic Will Noble saw the first performance of Mraky at Divadlo Alfred ve dvoře. Unfortunately, the piece relied heavily on language and while Noble found the experience engrossing, the meaning of it all escaped him, because the aforementioned language was Czech, and no translation had been provided.
This time around, the avant-garde art group Handa Gote has added English surtitles to their production, providing Prague’s English-language community another chance to see and experience Mraky (Clouds).
Veronika Švábová, a member of the Handa Gote group, uses bits and pieces from her family history, both real and remembered, to piece together a vibrant patchwork of memories that, though its pieces are incomplete, constitutes Švábová’s very subjective impression of the past. There is a constant dialogue between the past and the present in an effort to gauge the effect of past events and passed individuals.
Mraky means “clouds” in Czech and is also the name of a sweet pastry.
