Radar protest gains ground (News, 4 Jun, 2008)
Posted: 10:40 11/06/2008
If, by "my backward country", you mean the United States of America, then, sure, I'm a little proud.
I'm probably not a big patriot type, though. Don't we blow people up on a daily basis? Just because our bombs have got Boeing and Northrup written on them doesn't justify the tens or hundreds we kill every single day. The United States spends more on weapons than the next Top 10 countries spend, combined.
If you insist on going off on rants, at least do your homework.

Are you joking? Buddhist, Hindus and Jews blowing up people every day? Honor killing, genital mutilation? Burka for women? Are you proud of your backward country?

Thomas, you display an obviously high level of enlightenment, but you forget to mention that we have to deal with Jews, Buddhists and pesky Hindus. They can be bad people, too. You shouldn't limit your bigotry to just one religion. Your idea of further isolating the United States from the rest of the world is also a brilliant idea. It would certainly benefit our economy back home, which today relies almost solely on foreign industry, trade and oil. Very clever indeed.

I concur with the growing number of Americans who want to get out of NATO and the United Nations and leave Europe to her own devices. Maybe the Czech people are still longing for the Soviet occupation of 1968 and the great wisdom of tovarish Klement Gottwald.
With Putin as your neighbor, you can have your dreams fulfilled in the future. Then we wish you good luck in dealing with Muslims and whatever goodies your future holds for you.

As a Czech living in United Kingdom, I fear for Czech Republic if there is a military confrontation between the United States and Russia.
The U.S. government is not silly, as it knows that not only the radar station in the Czech Republic, but the whole country, will be the first target of any enemies of America. (and they are many these days ).
The United States has no qualms if other countries bear the first brunt of any attack on the United States.
It is today the most dangerous country for world peace, with its obsession for pre-emptive, and usually unsubstantiated reasons, for strikes against other nations it regards as an enemy.
These U.S. attacks usually said to be for "restoring democracy" are hiding the real reason of trying to secure the access to oil-rich areas of the world, for its attacks.
I urge the Czech government NOT TO AGREE to any U.S. installations on Czech soil. If you do, and you are wiped out for the sake of the United States, I hate to say it, but "I told you so".

Well said, Sanan. There is a obvious failure of democracy here when they force through a plan that 70 percent of the people oppose.

Who benefits most from this? The U.S. arms industry? Who is the biggest benefactor from this ridiculous missile shield pork barrel project?

They are pushing this through now because soon Bush and cronies will leave office. They have to make some more money while they can.

You have got to be kidding me! AN OPEN CONTAINER LAW IN PRAHA DURING A FOOTBALL MATCH! Are you out of your minds??
The No. 1 consumers of pivo in the world, and you're going to ban open containers? I guess it truly is the finale days of human kind. Politically correct has finally reached the Czech Republic...
You'll regret it. It sucks!

I think the idea of Vysehrad 4 is a good one, especially in the sense that there are no "powers" of the West or the East that force it on these nations.
Perhaps, from this viewpoint, anything that is said by "outsiders" is irrelevant.
From my own viewpoint, within the European Union, this semi-national entity can somewhat counter-balance self-serving states such as France and Germany.
It should be supported.

Czechs no longer brew top pilsner (Business, 4 Jun, 2008)
Posted: 23:44 08/06/2008
I would like to add my experience after drinking some of the beers mentioned.
My biggest surprise was "Bernard", which I tasted the first time in Rumburk (Northern Bohemia)while visiting there, recently.
This beer is far less filling than any of the others I tasted in the Czech Republic.
It does have a hoppy taste that I like, and overall, I would, personally, classify it as the best-tasting beer available commercially anywhere.
Of course the numerous mini-breweries in the United States and Canada produce truly great beers, if you like "India Pale Ale" style beers that I enjoy in my home town of Victoria.

Although I'm not doubting the quality of the beers mentioned in the article, I think that saying they are "the best" pilsner lagers in the world is a long call.
How many and wich Czech breweries made it to the world cup in San Diego?
I would like to compare these beers with Bernard, Svijany, Rohozec, etc. and see how the do against realy Bohemian pilsner lagers, and not some mass produced beer from the big brewers.
This article is very sensationalist. I wonder if the writer has actually tasted any of the beers mentioned, other than Pilsner Urquell and its sidekick Gambrinus

Scrap the cap (Opinion, 4 Jun, 2008)
Posted: 15:51 08/06/2008
There is not a single economic principle behind CAP. We have to subsidize farmers to overproduce, then buy overpriced products and, furthermore, pay export subsidies so that they can dump it on the Third World markets.

The best way to reform CAP is to eliminate it.

Mr Hurta,

I live in Prague, and I'm really happy that an exhibit like Sexism? can be openly shown in main street such as NarodnĂ.
Fortunately, I live in a society in which it is more acceptable to consume erotica (or even pornography) than to buy guns.
Please, stay in your backwater society if you are so afraid of the "satanic" influences of a really free one.

What a tough loss. It seems that Prague teams have something going against us up in Berlin. Congrats to the Panthers on an impressive run in the EFAF. It would have been great to see you there in the final for American football here in Czech.

Hey, in Korea they eat dog.
