Study shows Czech women lack self-esteem ( In the Czech press, 30 Apr, 2008)
Posted: 16:23 06/05/2008
This article really surprised me. As an American woman approaching 40, I feel that I am much more self-confident than when I was in my 20s.
I had more nerve and energy then, but use my energy and emotion more efficiently now.
I guess I took it for granted that all women feel that way. I'd like to read a more in-depth article on women of this generation. I would like to read something by an experienced writer comparing communism's later effects on the older generations. Modern femininity is a tricky balance of the superficial (skirts, make-up, shopping) the human (work ethic, equality) and practical (child-bearing, menopause.)
Are they really less confident? Is it because they lost aspects of their womanhood from trying to compete with men too much?
Is it because they were denied early promises of their working lives? How do the rural-living women's attitudes compare to those of American rural women in the 1920s (a period of despair among rural women and preceeding migration to cities from American farmland.)
I'm living in Dallas thinking how great it would be to retire early and live in rural Slovakia or the Czech Republic and small-scale farm -- the natives want to leave. I want to know why. This article just scratches the surface, I want to read more!

It's a pity that nobody can actually counter my arguments with facts: "my head is spinning with the silliness..." doesn't really contribute much to the discussion.

More verbose childish remarks against the United States from you know who. She is always quick to try to snag an audience for her cause...but once again has made it clear that it is only based upon personal bad experiences and not education.

My head is spinning from the silliness of my fellow letter-writer.

When someone is on the ballot from the Communist party, the Green party, the Libertarian party, etc., they are hardly playing toward to middle, but they are part of the election.
There is simply no logic in your statement.

Actually, I do not believe that I have ever criticized the USSR (at least not directly - today's Russia is not the USSR and in theory today's Russia is a democracy).
With this correction clarified, let's face it, we were allies with the Soviets to defeat Hitler.
Once World War II was over, we immediately were at odds with the Soviets.
There is a well-known statement in times of crisis "The enemy of my enemy is my friend", but it would be more prudent if politicoans remembered that sometimes "The enemy of my enemy is my enemy".
General George Patton knew this, even if Churchill and Roosevelt were willing to look the other way.

"A system that has sapped the spirit of entrepreneurism, created an atmosphere for corruption, incarcerated millions, and murdered millions more."

This sounds much like the United States. Large unregulated cartels control much of its economy; the Congress is corrupt beyond belief; 1 percent of its entire population is behind bars (far more, per head of population than any other country in the world) and it has murdered millions of people around the world.

And unlike the former USSR, the regime in the United States is still in power.

"There really are many different political views in the United States, but the two dominant parties play toward the middle to get 51 percent of the vote."

No, they play toward the middle because otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to take part in the election.

As for all your criticisms of the USSR: perhaps you have "forgotten" that your country was an ally of the Soviet Union.

To my fellow letter-writer: I say boohoohoo, and I also have a nice violin solo for you honey!
The commies banned all political parties during their 40 years of terror in Czechoslovakia, and KCM is advocating return of the Red Terror. They have no place in democratic country.
KSCM should be also banned, like the NSDAP, since they have basically the same idealogy!

10 Questions (Business, 26 Mar, 2008)

Having done a great deal of work marketing and promoting specialist sports and coach-built vehicles (as well as some work for Tatra's trucks in the United Kingdom and Europe too!), I think that Andersson has a point with regard to the use of an inhouse engine.
Tatra may not make a profit making cars again - but it can use the idea of a limited production series to showcase its unique technology.
The real problem for any company like Tatra is that despite Volkswagen's revitalization of the Skoda brand outside of the Czech Republic, it is a name that is largely unknown in what could be termed the 'Old' West. Having said that, there is no reason why a series of re-built T613 or even earlier cars could be re-built by outside specialists and then sold 'as new' to collectors around the world.
A limited run of the Datsun 260Z was resurrected in this way some years back in the United States by the American agency for that brand, precisely as this kind of marketing exercise.
Tatra can't compete against the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW or Volvo in the executive saloon market, but it can offer something special to those individualistic entrepeneurs who are not worried about being pigeonholed by peer groups, and still hanker for the likes of a latter day Citroen DS or CX.

Why doesn't the local government subsidizes milk production or milk production. The reason is it stifles competition and creates nothing new or better. No famous work of art or play received unconditional funding prior to its making. If the theaters will create good plays they will get noticed if they will be bad they will fail.

Mr. Hubacek - maybe time to learn democracy: citizens organisations that have a lot of expertise in certain matters have a full right to be involved in discussions. The last thing we need is technology driven dictatorships that keep citizens uninformed... Nuclear fission is already doing too much of that.

For clarity: not "some environmental groups don't share this optimism", *virtually no* environmental groups share this optimism... and with good arguments. My colleague van der Putte gave a nice one sentence summary.

Apparently "Brandon" doesn't realize that his advocating that missiles be launched against the United States emphasizes the necessity that we protect ourselves with a shield.
I assume he's not even a Muslim, who, proportionally speaking, only, have a higher number of zealous individuals who might advocate the destruction of the United States so that their brand of religion can infiltrate your societies.

This guy's parents were probably liberated by U.S. troops in WWII, and this is how he chooses to show his gratitude.
I wish my grandfathers had just stayed home and let you all rot under Hitler and Stalin. We'd still be free, rich, and far, far away from Europe's infantile politics.

What an interesting comment from Edward Barner.
After a second reading, I realized it is meant as a joke. He is taking the piss, isn't he?
He can't really be saying that he would be happy if the Czech Republic got rid of its democratically elected government and replaced it with the guy who writes for the local foreign language paper, can he?
I appreciate that there are countries where the local newspaper magnate thinks he runs, or should run the country/world, but no right -thinking person takes them seriously, do they?
Or maybe Edward Barner does. I would love to know what he is on (alcohol, drugs or just commission).
