There is not a single economic principle behind CAP. We have to subsidize farmers to overproduce, then buy overpriced products and, furthermore, pay export subsidies so that they can dump it on the Third World markets. The best way to reform CAP is to eliminate it. Tomas Temer

Exactly. If Czech government officials would simply decide to convert swords into plowshares and apply their misguided enthusiasm for missile defense system into agricultural subsidies from the European Union for Brdy Mountain, we might not be on the verge of another international arms race. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see a new line of organic fruits and vegetables in Czech markets grown from the Brdy region? Paulette C. Will

Mr Hurta, I live in Prague, and I'm really happy that an exhibit like Sexism? can be openly shown in main street such as NarodnĂ. Fortunately, I live in a society in which it is more acceptable to consume erotica (or even pornography) than to buy guns. Please, stay in your backwater society if you are so afraid of the "satanic" influences of a really free one. pivero

Manchester Radar protest gains ground (News, 4 Jun, 2008)

As a Czech living in United Kingdom, I fear for Czech Republic if there is a military confrontation between the United States and Russia. The U.S. government is not silly, as it knows that not only the radar station in the Czech Republic, but the whole country, will be the first target of any enemies of America. (and they are many these days ). The United States has no qualms if other countries bear the first brunt of any attack on the United States. It is today the most dangerous country for world peace, with its obsession for pre-emptive, and usually unsubstantiated reasons, for strikes against other nations it regards as an enemy. These U.S. attacks usually said to be for "restoring democracy" are hiding the real reason of trying to secure the access to oil-rich areas of the world, for its attacks. I urge the Czech government NOT TO AGREE to any U.S. installations on Czech soil. If you do, and you are wiped out for the sake of the United States, I hate to say it, but "I told you so". Well said, Sanan. There is a obvious failure of democracy here when they force through a plan that 70 percent of the people oppose. Who benefits most from this? The U.S. arms industry? Who is the biggest benefactor from this ridiculous missile shield pork barrel project? They are pushing this through now because soon Bush and cronies will leave office. They have to make some more money while they can. Jan Lexa

Kenilworth, NJ Czechs no longer brew top pilsner (Business, 4 Jun, 2008)

Although I'm not doubting the quality of the beers mentioned in the article, I think that saying they are "the best" pilsner lagers in the world is a long call. How many and wich Czech breweries made it to the world cup in San Diego? I would like to compare these beers with Bernard, Svijany, Rohozec, etc. and see how the do against realy Bohemian pilsner lagers, and not some mass produced beer from the big brewers. This article is very sensationalist. I wonder if the writer has actually tasted any of the beers mentioned, other than Pilsner Urquell and its sidekick Gambrinus Pivero

I live just outside Portland, Oregon. Up until a few years ago however, I spent more time in Prague than I did in Portland. So, I know a little about Czech beers. And, I still like them best. But, Portland beers are a close second. In fact, Portland has more breweries than Munich. If you like beer, put Portland on your itinerary. It's the greenest city in the United States, too. Free parking and charging for your electric car, for example, and free buses all over the downtowm area. And, some places you can even get Prazdroi on tap. gary betts

It's sad to see that so many other companys make spin-offs of great products like Czech Pilsner.. and then mass produce and flood the markets with it in which the "crowd" consumes and becomes quickly familiar, not knowing where the "real deal" originates from. Filip K

And what is the matter with eating rabbit? Not that I have ever consumed any. On the other hand, tripe soup is a bit unnerving, but the broth was wonderful. Hey, in Korea they eat dog. Richard Elliot

To compare things and events is a sign of being human and being intelligent. Communist "Jachymov Hell" slave labor camp can be compared to the Nazi slave labor underground camp "Dora". The story about "Jachymov Hell" opens up a debate about communist crimes during Stalin's grip on power. Naturally, as in Nazi Germany, dictator Stalin could not accomplish such crime alone. There was a communist criminal apparatus of the willing and the guilty. Whereas the names of the major Nazi criminals are known, the communist regime criminals are living in quiet retirement in Russia and the Czech Republic, relatively untouched. What is still needed is a "Communist hunter Simon Wiesenthal" type of organization/person, so justice would be served on those guilty, once and for all. Paul Zellman
