>> In the United States and other countries, human rights abuses, though they do take place, are being openly discussed and challenged, without fear of retribution, and the powers that be are politically liable. The upcoming U.S. Senate and Congress elections will prove this.r r This remains to be seen. Following the 2000 election fraud (sanctioned by the Supreme Court) and the 2004 fraud in Ohio (courtesy of Diebald Inc.) anything is possible. I don't remember much sign of either of these abuses having been "openly discussed and challenged", at least not in the US. Sally Amis

Bangkok Prices may vary (Business, 18 Oct, 2006)

This is good to know that there is recourse in price gouging (which I wasn't aware of). After several visits to the same place I was charged 25% more on a confirmed reservation upon arrival. I balked but they held their ground. Luckily my stay was short for I also planned a spa in Slovakia (price quoted was tripled there). This was 2004 and I assumed the increase was because of admission to EU. Needless to say I have not stayed at either since! I still travel to the republic and never encountered the same situation. My advise always have an alternate to fall upon. Chris Wells

I have encountered the price discrimination on many of my 24 trips to the Czech Republic. I don't approve of it, but I think it is getting better slowly. I think it is ridiculous for an American to suggest they might not go back to Prague because of it. Get real!!! Even if you pay double for a cab/dinner/beer in Prague, you are paying less than half of what you would pay for the same thing in most American cities, or Western European cities! Dana Barrer

It is sad to think that discrimination is occuring even at this level. I have been to Prague several times. I consider it my Homeland since both my parents families are still residing there. I will definitely be on the lookout when I return. Thank you for making me aware of this. r r Janice Solek-Tefft Underhill, Vermont USA Janice Solek-Tefft

Makes me rethink visiting again in 2007. I am aware of troubles with taxi's and politicians, beer to some extent but this is becoming too much. Are non-Czech visiters not welcome or are we fair game to be taken advantage of? Frank Hrabetin

At least it is not as bad as in the United States, with congressmen such as Foley in luring congress pages into sexual acts. So, all countries have some one in the government that gets caught in doing illegal activities. Jean F Beam

What a waste of paper. I agree with other comments that say it is very tiresome that the Prague Post continues to support writers who complain, complain, complain. Word choices like "nasty" to describe a culture's cuisine and casual references to "slurred words" shows the juvenile nature of the writers. Whatever happened to the professionalism of the Prague Post? John Crane

Jeffrey, of course Czech cuisine can't be compared to French in terms of subtelty of flavors. However, at least in my case, but I think many will agree with me, the main reason for me to go to a restaurant, specially at lunch time, is to eat because I am hungry, and many hospodas will do the job wonderfully for a more than reasonable price. You have to be able to find them, though, because yes, there are many that serve abominable things. Usually, the best are away from the tourist areas, or at homes. Needless to say, if I want to have a romantic evening with my wife, going to my favorite hospoda is out of the question. Max Bahnson

Surely Mr Bahnson is missing the point? If you like fairly heavy, starchy, greasy food with little seasoning and never want to eat a cooked fresh vegetable again in your life--if you just want to fill your pupik on the cheap--Czech cuisine is perfectly fine. It's much better on average than most other cuisines of this N European type. I like it sometimes myself, and find it done better the further I get from Prague--the best Czech meals I've ever had have been in Olomouc. r Within the cuisine, there has always been the problem identified in the article that the average Czech restaurant has to appeal to overwhelmingly price conscious customers. Additionally, in Prague the average pub/restaurant cannot afford to keep a decent cook, as competent cooks get hired by higher end places. The average Prague cook doesn't give a damn and it shows.r Comparing the cuisine to other countries'--well, you can't really compare it to the food of a land with sun. The Hungarians, Serbs and Croats like their meat and stodge, too, but they also know what peppers and tomatoes are for. r And certainly there is nothing in Czech cooking that can compare to the sophistication even of French cuisine bourgeois or its Italian equivalent. This is a reflection of the fact that the Czech palate is just not sensitive to anything subtle. On the other hand, the average Czech palate is a lot more educated now than in the early 90s. It is intolerable that Klaus should stall so unashamedly. Is he the great statesman, who wants to end this complete farce and country-wide paralysis or merely another party polictal imposter, who is hell-bent on assuring his man (and puppet) will eventually win? Topolanek has shown he can't deliver, now Paroubek should be given his chance to form a government. Alexander Kinghorn
