This is what I tried to do, and I hope that, this time, I was successful.”

Martin Kollár, freelance photographer; first prize, Portraits

While working on a video documentary about army cooks in Serbia and Chechnya, Martin Kollár was inspired to expand the piece into a photographic project linking what he calls the biggest hobbies of humankind: leading wars and cooking.“During the creative process, I realized that the visual language I need to use when making this very particular ‘cook book,’ which consists of personal portraits, recipes and stories, is very different to the one I applied when making the movie,” he said.

Jakub Skokan photographed Lukáš, a blind boy from a village near Znojmo, south Moravia, as part of his bachelor thesis at the Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín. “Lukáš is a son of our family friends; this is his story through photos,” he said. “He is pretty much integrated in society, and he is doing very well and has friends with no disabilities. It is a simple story of an ordinary boy.”
