Czech Press Photo winners '08

October 8th, 2008 issue

David W. Černý, Reuters; first prize, Spot News
David W. Černý documented the March 20 car crash on the D1 highway in east Bohemia, the worst mass car accident in Czech history. “You try to get [to the accident scene] as fast as you can,” he said. “Then, it’s not only reporting what happened there, but also trying to grasp the essence of the event. This is what I tried to do, and I hope that, this time, I was successful.”

Martin Kollár, freelance photographer; first prize, Portraits
While working on a video documentary about army cooks in Serbia and Chechnya, Martin Kollár was inspired to expand the piece into a photographic project linking what he calls the biggest hobbies of humankind: leading wars and cooking.
“During the creative process, I realized that the visual language I need to use when making this very particular ‘cook book,’ which consists of personal portraits, recipes and stories, is very different to the one I applied when making the movie,” he said.

Michal Novotný, Lidové noviny; first prize, Reportage
Embedded photojournalist Michael Novotný followed the International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) in Afghanistan. “When I told Michael yesterday to come to today’s press conference, he answered by a text saying that, together with the soldiers, he was trying to get over a Sept. 30 shooting incident, which he only survived by chance,” said competition founder Daniela Mrázková.

Martin Sidorják, Getphoto agency; winner, Czech Press Photo Grant 2008
Focusing on an emergent trend, Martin Sidorják depicted the bike as an alternative form of transport in Prague. “I have been covering this topic for a while, because I like sports, and I started noticing that there have been more and more bikes around lately,” he said. “It is an alternative means of transport here in Prague. … No one really deals with this issue, and yet there are many civil servants who bike to work.”

Michal Čížek, Agence France Presse; first prize, Art
While taking photos of active seniors for a charity organization, Michal Čížek was inspired to photograph a group of senior dancers from Horní Lhota, a village in Moravia, whom he saw on a national talk show. “It shows old people that don’t have a problem with who they are and know how to have fun, and this is not that common,” he said.

Jakub Skokan, freelance photographer; first prize, Everyday Life
Jakub Skokan photographed Lukáš, a blind boy from a village near Znojmo, south Moravia, as part of his bachelor thesis at the Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín.
“Lukáš is a son of our family friends; this is his story through photos,” he said. “He is pretty much integrated in society, and he is doing very well and has friends with no disabilities. It is a simple story of an ordinary boy.”
