UEFA CUP Czech soccer teams managed to almost break even in the UEFA Cup’s opening round Sept. 18. Although Baník Ostrava lost at home to Russia’s Spartak Moscow 1-0, both Slavia Praha and Sparta Praha fought to scoreless draws. In the Oct. 2 return legs, Slavia travels to Romania’s Vaslui while Sparta hosts Dinamo Zagreb.ATTACKED Dinamo Zagreb hooligans attacked some of the Sparta Praha fans and VIP guests before the game in Croatia. Some speculate the altercations were revenge for banners displayed by Sparta fans earlier this season supporting alleged Bosnian war criminal Radovan Karadžić and his military commander Ratko Mladić. Four bodyguards suffered minor injuries during the brawl and were taken to a local hospital.BASKETBALL The Czech men’s basketball team failed to qualify for the European Championship, dropping their final qualification game to Israel 98-61 in Tel-Aviv Sept. 20. The Israeli nationals dominated all four quarters, shutting down the Czech offense. Eurobasket 2009 will be held in Poland. SCULL Rower Miroslava Knapková triumphed in the women’s scull at the European Championship in Schinias, Greece. The win followed a disappointing fifth place finish for Knapková in Beijing. None of the four competitors who placed ahead of her in the Olympics participated in the European event.CYCLING German cyclists Eric Baumann and Dirk Müller of team Sparkasse dominated the longest one-day cycling race in the Czech Republic, the 263 km ride from Prague to Karlovy Vary and back. The highest ranked Czech cyclist was František Raboň (team Columbia) who finished third in the Sept. 20 race.ENGE Famed Czech driver Tomáš Enge and his Spanish teammate, Antonio Garcia, won the final race of the Le Mans 2008 series, held in Silverstone, England, Sept. 14. The Aston Martin drivers capped a season in which they took the checkered flag three times. They finished second in the Le Mans series overall standings.ATHLETICS Some of the world’s best athletes are scheduled to perform in an indoor competition to be held Feb. 26 in Prague’s O2 Arena. Among the largest box office draws expected to attend are 110-meter hurdles U.S. Olympic champion Dayron Robles and Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbaeva. The overall budget for the one-day event is $1 million (18 million Kč).DEMAND Czech Television issued demands for more than 1 million Kč from HC Pardubice hockey club for operating 87 TV screens inside the ČEZ Arena in Pardubice. The team has rejected the network’s claim, insisting the televisions only carry closed-circuit broadcasts.
