MOBILES Prices for SMS messages remain more expensive in the Czech Republic than the European average, according to a survey by the Czech Telecommunications Office. O2 customers, for example, pay 3.2 Kč (12.9 euro cents) in the Czech Republic compared with the European average of 11.6 euro cents (2.90 Kč). The cost of high-speed mobile Internet is also above EU averages. The biggest data plans cost an average of 1,070 Kč ($61/43 euros) a month compared with the EU average of 37 euros.

INTERNET Czech companies spent 162.2 million Kč on Internet advertising in August, down 7.5 percent from 175.4 million Kč spent in July, according to the results of AdMonitoring data found by Mediaresearch. Allianz Direct spent the most on Internet advertising with 11.3 million Kč, followed by Sazka (9.5 million Kč) and Vodafone (7.7 million Kč).
ELECTRONICS KeyTec České Budějovice, a producer of component parts for consumer electronics, saw its sales grow nearly 20 percent to 723 million Kč last year, according to the company’s annual statement. In 2006, the company had 607 million Kč in sales. The growth was attributed to new production launches of parts for flat-screen TVs.
VODAFONE Mobile operator Vodafone is preparing to launch its own 3G network by January, Lidové noviny reported Sept. 13. Currently the only network offering the 3G platform is Telefónica O2. The 3G network provides high-speed mobile Internet access, and is one of the main selling points of the new iPhone 3G, which is being sold by O2, Vodafone and T-Mobile in the Czech Republic.
ENGINEERING Foreign companies are increasing their investment share in the Czech engineering industry. Foreign shares in overall sales in the first half of 2007 reached more than 50 percent, compared with 13 percent 10 years ago, according to the Industry and Trade Ministry. Out of 637 engineering companies with more than 50 employees, 183 had a foreign owner in 2007.
TENDER SAP joined Hewlett-Packard, IBM and LogicaCMG to submit a unified bid for the Finance Ministry’s State Treasury Project, which would create a digital information system to manage public finances. The only other bidder, Indra ČR, was disqualified for failing to post a deposit, leaving the SAP alliance the effective winner.
MERGER ČEZnet and ČEZdata have announced plans to merge into ČEZ ICT Services this October, according to Euro Online. Both companies are owned by power producer ČEZ. The single outfit will focus on complete services for IT and communications technology for the ČEZ group as well as other clients and will have an annual turnover of more than 4.5 billion Kč.
